Cover versions that were better than the originals

Was listening to this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5Xl0Qry-hA) yesterday and was shocked to discover it was a Cher song originally (couldn't find the original version but you get the idea... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jA-lKOKy ... re=related).

That got me thinking about cover versions rarely being a patch on the original song, so...

Post up cover versions that were better than the originals. (In your opinion)

I Heard it Through the Grapevine- Gladys Knight and the Pip's

Was covered by Marvin Gaye and also the California Raisins. I have Gladys' 45" single and it kicks the crap outta Marvin's version (IMHO).

I didn't bother youtubing them, I doubt they'd have the Gladys version up.

youtube has everything gladys's version is not rare trust me

didn't think it was rare, just 95% of the time i look up great older songs I love I can't find them.

Musicwise the 5th Dimension Version was ok but the singin is so boring IMO.
Marvin and Tammi did a better job but the Cover from Marlena is a killer. I can really hear a "California-Soul-Vibe" out of her vocals and also the nice string arrangement.

good picks , but i think the 5th is Illest the marlena one is dope but way to overrated, thatnks to shadow ,just my oipion but great tnes none the less

Seems to have been soul and funk up to this point, but i've always thought that Hendrix killed Dylan's version of "All Along The Watchtower".

i got confused.. sometimes people say "killed" in a bad way.. like in terms of killing a joke...
