Literally zero access to vinyl records- alternatives?

Hey guys, so I moved to Vietnam a couple years back because I got a job out here. I've really wanted to get my hands on an MPC and start making beats so I asked a friend who happens to be traveling out here to bring me an MPC. Unfortunately, in Vietnam there are literally NO record stores. No such thing as turntables or none of that. Most of the DJs I know out here have to fly to other countries to buy records, which is something I just don't have time or money for.

Where can I download some high quality (flac?) records online? I tried a very famous torrent site but they didn't have much.

Your best bet would be buying traktor scratch with a soundcard. Traktor can play flac files so you an rip CDs to flac and then use the record as you normally would to sample. The traktor soundcard has a wonderful sound to it with 24bit converters and you can pitch up the record. Another alternative would be to sample CDs off of a cdj, you wouldn't need a mixer because the line output on the cdj would provide enough output. In anycase you won't find a site with an endless supply of bodacious flac torrents, trust me I've looked.

I'm confused, why would he need Traktor Scratch?

A.) There are no records to be had.
B.) Why not just download EAC + LAME for free and get a better & faster rip?

Imho travelin to another country to pickup a TT + Traktor seems like a tad of a overkill.

On topic: Here are some suggestions that will hopefully help, unless you were just fishing for a new download spot Your best bet is propably to use the multitude of online stores. Most stores today will deliver anywhere and alot of the second hand vinyl spots also sell online. Sure you will have to wait for the records but, it is what it is. On the other hand I'm pretty sure Vietnam is not without music all together. The supply of 70's soul gold might be thin, but there must be atleast casettes of vietnamese music.

Alot of people would kill to get their hands on the ethnic goodness there must be around somewhere. Adapt and overcome. There is sound everywhere, it doesn't always have to come from a piece of vinyl rotating on a bed of felt.

Depending on what is available in your area, you may be able to trade music you find locally (cassettes, CDs) through the mail to other diggers that may be looking for Vietnamese music.

Don't overlook radio broadcasts, both over the air and the internet as well as satellite radio for sources.

Not all vinyl FLAC rips are all that -- it really depends on the setup and care the ripper used when making the recording. A crappy turntable setup will make a FLAC vinyl rip sound awful.

Ebay. Also, did you have a record collection and a turntable prior to moving to Vietnam ? If you moved all the way there for a job, I know the money must be good lol Ebay will get you everything you need down to the cartridges . What's really going on ?

Pick up a Wax Poetic mag and take your pick of any of the vinyl sellers that advertise there. Plus you got internet, you can find a turntable to purchase from any neighboring country. Stop being a silly ****.

Mr Guiness - I didn't have a record collection back in the states. The money out here is considered "low income" in the United States, but because the cost of living out here is so low, it makes for a comfortable lifestyle and an opportunity to save.

Pastor-of-Muppets - I don't blame you for being unaware of this, but there is no copyright law in Vietnam. All of the compact discs in Vietnam are low-quality, pirated versions from China and sometimes file types used are not .WAV . I want some high quality options.

Thanks for the replies guys. Right now it looks like the only viable options are either to fly to a foreign country to do digging every once in a while or order online. The reason I wanted to avoid this is 1.) I don't have a turntable and they don't sell them out here. 2.) All foreign products coming into Vietnam get taxed 100% upon entry. So a $20 record will cost $40 by the time it gets into your hands- not including shipping costs. That on top of a 100% taxed turntable..... It's gonna be a lot of money. Ever seen a $40,000 base model Honda Civic? Only in Vietnam... -_-

Peopel like you are destroying the art form that is diggin.

I've been buying a LOT of flacs/wavs these days since i'm trying to get a brand new set together of new school stuff for serato and i dont give a damn about CDs. a feel that new vinyl is often overpriced so i have a basic rule that if i can get the flac/wav legit ie the label/artist gets paid, i have a lossless copy of the audio and i can have it within minutes and make any edits etc i chose ready to DJ with.

I still dig for the oldies & spend on rarer unusual shit, and if i'm in the shop i will pick up the new stuff too and always get the low run collectables. But it's a massive pain in the @ss to buy a record, hook up my sound card, rip it and then work on limiting/normalising to get it as loud as the rest of the stuff i'm playing.
