Interesting Article on Kanye....

Yo this forum has the potential to be ill! If yall get a chance check out this months issue of Scratch magazine, there is an interesting article on Kanye West as well as Alchechemist. Kanye shares some insight on his techniques which I thought were interesting.

Also just curious do any of you sample straight from CD's, what are your thoughts on this method of sampling Vs. wax? I have been running accross some cats that are against CD sampling, something about the hip hop code of ethics or some ish! Anyhow just thought I would ask.

Well it depends... I usually samplem off of vinyl, but I mean anything goes... I know people that want a cleaner sound and get break CDs... I'm personally against it, but do what you feel comfortable with...

Now if you're talkin about samplin a Dr. Dre CD for drums... Yeah I am morally against that and think it degrades the culture...

But if you can't find a Roberta Flack break on vinyl and you have it on CD... Hellz Yeah... No one will know except you... So that's more of a personal issue....

I sample sounds off of movies... That don't make me any less authentic...

i lost a record with a lovely sample a while back, i looked everywhere trying to find another vinyl copy. no luck. but i actually found the album on cd so whatever i got it



hope im not stuck in the cd 'generation' :roll:

I'm a strictly vinyl person for the most part, but I'll be honest that I had Roberta Flack's first album and it had this awesome sample that she sung over... I tried to get her vocals out and it didn't work because the vocals on the vinyl were recorded slightly off center...

I went and got the re-mastered CD and the vocals were dead center...

Used a Vocal Remover and BAM... Had my sample...

You do what you gotta do sometimes... Like I said I love vinyl and it's what the culture grew on...

I'd hate to see the day when CD's replace vinyl for diggin... :cry: :cry: :cry:

I was just curious. I mean I get my sounds from just about everywhere, like others I even get my samples from movie sound tracks. Some of the hottest samples I've heard have come from movies. My brother sampled this sound off of the bad boys II sound track and it sounded crazy in the MPC 4000.

I wouldn't jack a drum from someone else cause theres no originality in that, but then again we are sample heads and all is fair in love and war.... Personally I like CD sampling cause the sound is real crisp!

By the way where can I get a vocal remover? I have one but its kind of ass.

TELL me about it. I lost this old song I had on wax a while back, and I search all over, dig alot. Anyway, the only place it is , is on a compilation cd that costs 25$ And I have all the other songs on that cd. So, I will still go lookin.

All a vocal remover does is cancel out everything that is dead center in the mix (for most music this is the vocals, but it could be anything else such as the guitar riff or something too)...

Any standard Audio editing software has it... Adobe Audition has one... SoundForge should have one... Some call it a "Center Canceller" or "Vocal Remover" or whatever... You gotta search for it, but it's prolly in whatever software you use if any...

And if your software doesn't do it, I understand you can do the same thing by inverting the phase of one of the stereo channels and then mixing the two channels into a mono sample.

Yea that would work... Pretty much though if you're software has a phase inverter... It should have a vocal remover...

I`m curious you mention that most audio editors have this functions like Sound Forge, Cool Edit and etc. I`m using Peak 4 programs and I have looked thru DSP windows and Inserts windows any idea what this would be called in Peak 4? Any help is appreciate.

i sample mp3s for sounds and chop em up in recycle...vinyl would be better, but i don't have a record player or records. maybe i'll get those soon.

i think its cool as long as ur enjoying what u do and its sounding good, then thats it.

i used to sample of cd's but now i use records and im happy with that for the simple reason that there is tons of obsure stuff on vinyl that aint been pressed up on cd.

but use whateva means available to u to make something thats from the heart, thats what hip hop has always been to me.

threads like this are so stupid does it matter where you get your sounds from as long as the beat is dope. i own hundereds of records and hundreds of cd's it doesn't matter as long as you find the sound you are looking for. cats say they hate to see the day cd's replace record, the only reason some producers use vinyl is because some of that suff is just not avaliable on anything but vinyl so when these so called culture pureist say they only use vinyl, i laugh at them backpackin a@# mutha#&*$!
