i fu*kin hate sampling now

i spent about 5 hours beinda turntable with piles of sh*tty vinyl, and the only reason its sh*tty is casue i found all of.... 4 samples that are worth using. today and yesterday alone i spent the last patience i have with these friggen records. i dont knwo if its my staks of records, the fact i skip through some tracks after only hearing 10 seconds of them, cause i find something wrong with them, whether they got too fast a temp, a consistant pathetic backround sound or whatever te reason. but regardless i aint feelin the fact i gotta sample, but then theres no other way. i wanna make beats but damn, sampling is 80% of the challenge. anyways, i got about 1500 records, so i'd natrally think that theres no way there cant be any good samples. theres gotta be plenty right?

im just not hearin them or somthing, im relly vexed. i was asked to help produce for a local album this week, so maybe thats another reason im stressin so much, i need to come up with product and fast.

im still fairly new at the MPC, going on 2 months now, and im starting to really get the hang of it now, and i dont want to waste my time sampling, i want to be making progress, so at the end of the night i can hear my progress, the last 2 nights ive gone to bed with the same status as that morning.

thanks not even the worst part, i go to get down to writing, i mean i and i gots writer block. im all out of ideas. i get 2 lines down, then end up scribblin the page away. i spend 45 minutes yesterday meditating with my pad righ tthere ready to go, and nothing, not even a fu*ckin idea. man im vexed.

anyways, this is just a ventin thread for me, but to stay on topic, you guys mostly sample what genre____? i got about 800, at least 800 classical records, im so sick of violins and trumpets its not funny.

yeah u need to just keep at it. i owuldnt really worry bout that stack. get like 20 and mess with them for a month. u sound like ur overwhelming urself. also if u aint ready for the project dont do it. there will be many more. 2 months is really nothing on the mpc so u gotta give it a little more time. Sampling is hard at first but ull get it.

Definitely man... Even the most seasoned veterans get writer's block or get in a slump of makin beats... I get it eveyr now and then... Trust me forcing it is only gonna make it worse... Sometime you gotta just get some away time and come back when you're ready...

As far as that project, try to get it done... It'd be good exposure, but don't force it cause you also don't wanna put out a sh*tty project...

that's why I compose alot of shit, but if I find something to sample **** composing and spending minutes using chords and figuring out what scales to use.

you need to relax your taking things to fast two months sh!t, i couldnt do Sh!t at two months. you need to take some time away and soke up what you just learned, then come back and learn some more then use what you learned before you took that break and you'll see your productions will have gotten tighter.

as for sampling man your going at it all wrong roll your self a musical fatty .burn one and sit back and listen LISTEN to all the song or songs there's got to be samples in there.

those twenty records listen to them again they got to have a snippet or a drum sound ,snare, hihat, something . you need to listen to every genre dont just stick to one genre.

oh and like these guys said dont rush into pojects so fast ther's a lot to learn on this machine , you came to the right place these people can help you .

I'd say skip out on that project until you have the mpc down for at least a few more months of heavy use. As far as sampling goes listen to these dudes when they tell you to be more patient. Relax with a pad, pen and a less intimidating stack write down anything that sounds interesting to you, even if it has nothing to do with what your currently working on. Because later down the road when you're looking for somthing check you're notes and listen to that record again. Even if you don't look at any of the shyt you wrote you'll remember which records had that kind of sound because you wrote it down. Separate records you've listened to all the way through from the others that haven't been combed yet. Get smoked out and just clear your head of other bullsh!t pay attention to how things fit together. Plus the whole point of this shyt is to dig and manipulate right so keep at man enjoy those platters- peace

yea this shi* takes a while to get down. Dont think u gonna be droppin ish stragiht out the gate. Just takes some hard work and disipline, like practicing every day.

Dj that shit out or make a little mixtape, MD, or something to grow more familiar with your music. I got most of my shit on a iPod now. When I`m out and about I really listen to the music to build up my music history and store that sound in my head. At least when I`m ready to go to the lab I already have the sound playing in my head and a feel of which records would have the pieces, phrases, and feel I want to work with. Work with something familiar and flip it so that it`s original your feel do you.

save yourself some time and money and pick up a portable record player. I got a few off of Ebay, or if you like to be hip and modern you could pick up the Vestax one.

I does get frustrating not finding samples. I've gone months without finding stuff, and then going back to records that I've listened to a ton of times, and hearing something I never heard before and then sampling it.

Now I'm going months with having samples in a crate that I haven't been able to get around to because of school and whatnot. So it could be worse I guess...you could have samples galore and not have time to use them...now that sounds dumb...

but dude, seriously you are probably just overlooking samples. I often revist allready sampled records in my stax and i find new shit.

You cant force anything......sometimes i find a nice loop, but even though its a loop...it somehow seems impossible to work it out. Ill just go on to something else....then like 3 days later, ill go back to the loop, and make a banger!

even the simplest shit can get to ya. Slow down and think clearly. experiment, and rely on your basic knowledge. I.e. like how to chop, detune, loop. and have fun!

SAMPLING has to grow on you, and you have to pay dues, your beats will get better with experience. You have to learn what to listen for, and sometimes its not as simple as it sounds; but it really is! ya know.

wel at least i know its normal now, like i said, im gunna take a break, and get back at it next week

Yea man... I was in a slump until I heard that album.... I sewriosuly got so inspired...

I listened to that album everyday for like 2 months straight just soakin it in....

I recently went diggin and picked up the White Album (I had it on CD but I wanted it on vinyl)... Whenever I have free-time (rarely) I listen to it to figure out where he got some of the samples from... The drums are amazing that he could filter some of them out...

Seriously that album raised sampling to another level...
