Are you interested in studying the music from a historical standpoint, or more interested in performers, composers etc?

Id say start early on, with New Orleans shit. Like Count Bassie, King Oliver even Satchmo was f**king ill before he got on TV.

The guy who started modern jazz was proably Lester Young, a real dude on the tenor sax. Out of kansas City Missouri. He inspired Charlie Parker and basiclly anyone to ever play a sax after him. then there's bebop -- Max Roach, Dizzy, Monk, Clifford Brown.

I would also check out the sisters -- Dinah Washington, Ella...

im real into the 70s fusion shit. I like lonnie liston smith, les mcann, freddie hubbard, herbie mann, crusaders, ahamd jamal, gil scott, sun ra, david axlerod, bob james, and alot of stuff from that era.

yeah man , its all about the 70s fusion for me too. theres so many artists who were 'underground' during that era and did some awesome stuff. id say start with the basics and then as you dig deeper and learn more you start finding the gems

word up. i collect rare 70s fusion LPs, and rare disco/funk LPs. the illest part about digging for jazz fusion or jazz funk is that they are a sh1tttload of unheard of bands that recorded only one, maybe 2 LPs, but damn there are some real gems on those joints. not to mention the crazy amount of FOREIGN fusion gems, all that polish sh1t, and some insane french stuff, nothing beats searching for and finding those LPs. music wise theyre really ill LPs to listen to, sampling wise - loops for dayssss
