Thick records

I just bought this suitcase type thing of records. The case has 4 books in it--each book has slots for records--they're complete orchestras. I was a little surprised to see how organized and complete the OLDASS set was, but it's all there. Anyway, the records in the set are thick. Like maybe 3 times thicker than normal records, and heavier. My turntable can't even play em right, becasue they're so firm.

Anyone have any of these? Or know their story?

It´s not 10 inch 78 rpm´s? Or are they 12 inch?

older 12" records are thick. What does it do to not play right?

SOUNDS LIKE 78'S ON THAT OLD ASS vinyl that had some metal in it, i have seen a 10 inc thats bout 1/2inc thick and plays backwards and it's not a 78, i think it was a 16 speed and check this out it played from the inside out, this lady brought it into my store to get it recorded int he studio in the back , the engineer had to rig a turn to play it .

she said her dad recorded back when she was a kiid and she was bout57-60 yrs old he did it on a home recorder, i have one of these turn that records like this some dude just gave it to me afew months back i might want to sell it ,as i have no vinyl to press for it. and it has a nail for a needle on the layth, crazy shi+
i dont think those records are worth that much inless you take them to a record show and some one thats into them wants to buy them,
as fars aplaying them ,i would not recommend it. but thatt just me.
a 78 turntable usually has a special needle you need to flip toit, to play it.

They´re made out of shellac, same stuff that was used as some sort of lacquer to give a sturdy finish on wooden furnitures and other wood objects. Sh*t is hard and brittle as hell.

word i just couldnt think of the word at the monet so i said vinyl but yeah thats what i meant,
yeah the vinyl is made of a mixture the stuff that finger nail paint is made from too.

and i believe shellac is a secretion from the shellac beetle

I think yer talking about Transcription discs-
In the old days,Radio shows were recorded on large discs for network distribution.
these discs mostly use a flat 3.5 mil stylus,and play from inner to outer groove.
SOME are VERY valuable(in the thousands)-so dont sleep on it-but be warned,playing the 3.5 groove WILL mess up a normal stylus-
Then,there are the "go into the booth and record yer own"type shellacs-
usually one-sided,brittle-and WAY cool-stuff like talking letters(check some shadow joints)-mom playing the piano for uncle Bob/ceremony/awards dinners(some with really bad comedy)......
anyone could record whatever for a small fee-
these booths were common up into the mid-sixties,then cassettes arrived:):)

sammy yeah thats what it was this lady said that her daddy recorded it for here before she was born and it was reecorded at bimbo's in SFthis was way way way back in the days yeaht eh shi+ was thick i didnt even want to put it on the turn ,i dropped it on and it wasthe same thickness of the spindle.

I have a bunch of those 'record your own' records - some are pretty neat. I have a series of like 7 or 8 all from one family from north dakota stretching over almost a decade - from 59 to 68 or something like that. They must have had their own record cutter. Alot of it is talking letters, also the fam making music together. pretty interesting hearing some woman 25 years older than me grow up, not to mention develop her musical skills...

I have another that's someone practicing piano at a church - really spooky sounding with the combination of the poor quality recording and heavy room reverb from the church.

I love 'found' sounds like that - I have a whole box of home-recorded cassettes - pretty heavy wierdness in there...

always buy them whenever i see them-

a while back,goodwill out on 122 and Halsey had a bunch of
small size blanks for those home recorders-I left them there,
and were gone next time i was there-

Thanks for the tip here..........I got some of those old thick joints too.Sounds like poop when you play em' I won't even try any more, just let em' sit and collect dust.

78's( and i dont mean modern vinyl like the regular wax we sample--cuz in sum countries other than US their records play at 78 rpms instead of 45 or 33 1/3). 78's are the first incarnation of the modern record. before those they had cylinders, like a toilet paper roll or a spool of thread, and a player that was like a lathe..you spooled up the cylinder and wound it up with a crank...then came the 78's and there player which are called Victrola's(RCA's name brand), theres other names for the record player(Phonograph)..e.d.e said they had metal in them he's correct, but they mostly made up of clay, reinforced with metal and then covered with Pitch(the black stuff). I got a gang of em..if u drop one a couple inches from the ground they shatter like whoa!!!.. They cant be played on our Needles and cartridges..If u ever seen a Victrola the needle is a NEEDLE, like a sewing needle no bulls#%t!!If u attempt to play these on ur tables u'll destroy ur needles---It aint worth it.........Now a foreign 78(made after 1958-ish) say from Japan is the same vinyl as the modern wax, its just that it was pressed to the vinyl at 78 rpms..if ur turntable dont have 78 speed, select 45 and pitch it up to =10(or=8-technics owners) or whatever pitch scale ur table has, just pit5ch it up all the way, then add a lil extra pitch once its inside the MPC.............
