Look what i just bought... (hope it was worth it)!

some nice records (Watson, BT Express, KC & the sunshine band, Meola and some others) but I wouldn't pay 800 for it even if it has all that 80s pop stuff. I'm not in that 80 pop stuff (of course I like it cause it remind me to my youth years but I wouldn't buy records from that period except some Duran Duran, Tears for Fears, Talking Heads, Simply Red)

But its a big collection. Have fun with it and if not sell the stuff you dont like.

what a shame, classical and folk music is far from garbage. IMO, along with movie soundtracks (not blockbuster films though) those would be the best. Pop music and famous bands music is more useless than folk and what not. The "trash" of my collection is the shmultzy hawaiian music (ie: hawaiian christmas carols)

Well, it's not "garbage", you're right. It's just not what i'm intersted in (not my taste). Classic and folklore (swiss and german folklore) records is what you can find everywhere, and nobody wants to buy those (so from a selling point, they're garbage).

I've started going through the stuff i didn't know the artists yet. Turns out there's lots of good records in there!

The pictures just show some examples. I wouldn't be happy if that would be all i got out of those 2'000 records.

I've found about 200 good soul/funk records so far. Another 200 good jazz records.

If i count only the soul/funk records, then i've paid 4 bucks for one record, if i count the jazz records aswell it's just 2 bucks. That's better than any online auctions here in switzerland (cheapest place to buy records, a good soul record will cost about 5-10 bucks this way). Those are all records that i love and want to own. If i bought them at the record stores here in switzerland, it would be 30 bucks a record. 200 x 30... that's 6'000$... compared to 800$.

I'll sell about half of the records again. The rest will stay.

ahh yeah I didn't take into consideration that you live over in europe. so I can see what you mean now... personally I like european folk records, dance party records (folk, accordian, square dancing) but I rarely come across those here. I always find good bits to cut from those.

@jibber: What about flea market and thrift stores? I buy 99 percent of my records at thrift stores and pay something between 10 Cent and 2 Euro for a record. Of course not so many soul records there but I always find interesting stuff to listen to and also sample from. Polish Jazz, Progressive Rock etc. Look out for swiss stuff to dig deep. I dont know bout the swiss scene back in the 60s or 70s but I bet there is some intersting stuff out there. Maybe in the library scene.

That is a lot of vinyl. Looks like it will keep you busy for awhile. If the records are clean -- then it's a good haul. Most of the interesting records here at the thrifts are usually pretty ratty.

Is that Star Wars LP a foreign soundtrack release or something else?

I went through most of the records now. I think i'll end up with about 700 records from the soul/funk/jazz area that i like.

Other records i've found so far... George Duke, Greg Perry, Buddy Miles, Doobie Brothers, New York City (had no idea who they are), Billy Ocean, Was (Not Was), Carol Douglas, more Grace Jones, Chicago, Masekela, Phoebe Snow, George Winston, Al McDowell, Bob James, more Al Jarreau, Earl Klugh, Jimmy Heath, Eric Gale, John Tropea, more Joan Armatrading, Jackie Wilson, Thoko (not exactly funk or soul, but i like it), Edwin Hawkins Singers, etc, etc...

There's a lot more pop/rock records that are not as obvious as the usual stuff, but it seems it's all good records. Maybe i'll keep some of them for listening (i have my roots in rock and blues music).

99% of the records are in mint condition without a single scratch.

If i'd live in the states, i guess it wouldn't be such a great find considering what i've paid. However, regarding the prices for records in switzerland, it's a great find! Let's say i'll keep just 500 records (as said above, more like 700), then i've paid roughly 2 bucks for each record (many of those records would cost me 30 bucks in a record store)... pretty good deal for me.

yeah I dont suspect that common records here would be common over there. and anyways, even things like bob james are not tossed in the dollar bins here.

This was obviously an ex DJs collection so the condition isn't the best, but so far I've found about 100 keepers. I was hoping for more 60s and 70s but unfortunately the bulk are from the 80s and early 90s.

The BBC records are more interesting... basically a whole raft of atmospheric recordings from the late 50s and 60s. Ripe for the sampling.
