Nah, EPS was realesed around 1990.

I could be an Sp-12, ans Emulator II (or I), Ensoniq mirage, or a fairlight as far as I can tell.

Tommy Boy had a Sinclarion and a Fairlight in the studio at that time

around 85, Afrika Bambatta used these machines for some tracks at the time according to an interview in the last issue of Scratch magazine

i'd guess probably an Emulator. the Sequential DrumTraks can actually sequence pitch changes, but i sure don't think it was used here. they sound like self-sampled drums, how some of them cut off short and change pitch like it was done w/ a wheel. pretty lame track suprisingly, sounds like what most people would do in their first few days of using a sampler. i'd like to hear the others though...

the drums sounded sampled to me as well. i'm surprised you thought the track was lame! considering the technology available in 1985 i think it's pretty damn impressive, just based on the fact that it pounds and swings pretty good. i think it's a nice little history lesson on the subject of the beginning of beat making with samples. if this thing was done on an SP-12 (which i feel it was) then that means these guys probably only had the thing for a matter of months, maybe less, before putting this stuff together. hey, it's a free world though. where would we be without opions?

I'm almost positive that the drum sounds are Oberheim DX. The crash cymbal and open hihat sound are definately DX. I used to have one, and still use the samples from it.

The other pitched around samples on top are probably Emulator or SP12.

right, i see what you're saying. compared to what else was out at the time, this just sounds *very* amateur. i'm guessing these guys didn't release much else besides this? probably wrong, but i've never heard of them. unfortunately hip-hop was still pretty juvenille and un-experienced at this point and it really shows here. actually, there's alot of good electro/hip-hop from around this time which is better than this. quality is quality... for a more extreme example, Keith LeBlanc (of Sugar Hill) was doing amazing things around this time with producer Adrian Sherwood which became Tackhead. Ministry's 'Twitch' album was years beyond this stuff while using pretty much the same equipment. Skinny Puppy, Test Dept., Severed Heads, the list goes on... true, these are considered mainly 'industrial' electronic acts of the era, but i think some of you may be suprised by the similarities in the feel and sound to older hip-hop while really showcasing some talent and forward-thinking ideas.

true. we happen to have a DX at the studio and i think it still has the factory ROMs in it. i'm gonna mess with it tonight and see if i can make it twist. that thing will probably be happy just to get turned on seeing as we haven't fired it up in over a year. my business partner wants to sell it but i'm trying to convince him to hang on to it. it's a pretty cool box.

i definitely agree. when you've got different styles hovering around the same BPM and using the same gear there is bound to be some similarities. it probably would have been sick to be making music when all this stuff was NEW. everyone was just so psyched on all of it. going back even further, i wish i could have been around for the birth of synths as well. a very exciting era. these days it's like "how many plugins can i fit onto my computer".. snooze.
