What you are supposed to do is skim the record...take out random sounds and make a track that has no cohesiveness. Then throw the record out with the left over porridge and Alize from breakfast. well, im not the person who is good at cataloging musicians and producers names, etc. (for the most part) so for me, listening before buying is important if im droppin some cash. Im also lucky in that the places I go to let me listen. The thing is tho, I always go for the dollar bins, ocassionaly 2-3 bucks......IF its 3$ bucks or less, I rarely listen. its those 7 dollar, 15 dolar, etc. records i make sure i listen to.

The one problem with listening in the store is its not the same as in the lab. You can make a judgement about a record because of where you are at. You can call a record bad before you have even gotten to the 2 second snippet on the B side half way in.....something you wouldnt have found with 2 minutes of listening.

Ive gotten heat off of truely crap records, simplely because I was willing to experiement or was feeling something at the time, and because i gave it a true listen.

Bangers can be made out of shit that you wouldnt hear in the store. IF you judging a record by some loop off it that was easy to pick out in the store, chances are that someone else already found that Gem.

I preview it with the mind set of getting an overal "feeling" of the record......and seeing if that "feeling" inspires me. If a record has something that evokes emotion right aways, usually it has more fuel for me to make heat.

Seriously last week i made a beat out of a 1 second snippet, reversed it, slowed it down, timestreached, and added bass.......no **** way I could determine that I would do that in the store........LOLZ and that was some crappy dollar record ive probably seen a million times.

i don't play the guessing game anymore. that only leads to stacks and stacks of vinyl in my crib that i will never listen to again or sample anything from. buy a numark portable(in my case, i'm lucky enough that the spot i dig at has a record player there ). Guessing can work out most of the time cuz when you are digging, u will not sit and listen to a whole record for a sound or loop but moreso than not, a hot sample will jump out at you. there's no right or wrong answer but i just choose to listen first now. You can have an artist that has had his songs sampled by all of the production greats and he has one album that noone has sampled from and u may think you've found a gem. When you get home, u find out why noone has sampled from that album.
