yes I agree... though I have to say, the newest ones (ie: the ones sold 6 months ago) are not as good as the older ones.. they are built cheaper... they feel more hollow inside the outer planks than the old ones.. I have a 4X4 and a 5x5.

Gosnells got a good spot (op shop job i think, then they have a MASSIVE record fair twice a year) the usual spots too, 78 records, there's a joint next to the Butcha shop in city called noise pollution that's reasonable too.....bit pricey but hes got good shit.

If you need a guide to take you digging, can pass on an email of a guy who should be happy to take you.


as for the listening bit, if your serious about listening while your diggin, take a portable turntable.

i am a big fan of sitting at the back of some 2nd hand store, sifting through the garbage from some gem to flip.

I'm lucky (not sure the set up in other countries) but in UK we have loads of 2nd hand stores with records going for 20p-£1 which is filthy cheap, i usually buy out the store, you can find something worthy in almost anything, even if its a little skit to help blend your mixtapes together

I already had 'dug' for thousands of used 70's-80's CD's before I even had a sampler, wasn't paying £15+ for an album brand new and storage space was a priority. Besides, MP3 and bluetooth signalled the beginning of the end for CD sales as we once knew it. So yes, trawling through crates and stacks of CD's that nobody wants in shop that dont smell great and nothing is sorted, spending hours in the shop scanning everything. I don't think my daughter enjoyed the digging so much after a few times lol.

I know it 'aint vinyl although the whole diggin process is the same. Most CD's were digitally remastered to remove the pops and crackles, but it was a compromise I could live with. I class it as digi-digging, as you never know what you'll find, until you find it but still have the convenience of CD quality. I don't consider online e-digging as 'digging' but understand fully that some cats have no other option.

Used to enjoy diggn, I should treat myself to a turntable so at least I sampled from an actual vinyl record at least once...

I dig the CD racks at any place that sells them. Don't be ashame of CDs, they are just as valuable and collectable as their vinyl counterparts. Most shit that wasn't putted on wax in its time were put on CD years later like those bonus and extra takes, sometimes you get the entire album in instrumental on another disc. I've seen CDs go for $500 dollars if its the original pressing and not a cdr.

i dig through, vinyl, CD MP3, Cassette whatever. you would be surprised how many samples you'll find if you leave your itunes playing at all times of the day. and then dig through some other source at the same time

I dig crates too. To me it is not about sampling, but I think I enjoy the whole process of diggin'; look for interesting records, cleaning up, playing on turntables.
I even enjoy common LP records that you would find in dollar bins.

By the way, Expedit Ikea shelves are durable enough for storing LPs, just make sure that orientation is correct.
I've seen those on majority of VH1 Crate Digging episodes; Pete Rock, Jazzy Jeff, J. Roc and others all have Expedits.

By the way, I bought Ikea Kilby book shelves for storing vinyls. They are so cheap; only 25 dollars per unit! But it was a big mistake, like old saying, you get what you pay for.

It was good in the beginning (BTW, the bookshelf must be attached to wall):



Obviously, record jackets would stick out from the shelves, which is OK to me.

I replaced those crappy shelve boards with reused boards (salvaged from damaged Ikea Billy) later.

Expedit shelves are the SHIT! I bought two shelves (4x4 & 5x5) in England and thanks to the movers, they made it here to Las Vegas intact and no problems.


I've always wanted the 2x4 Expedits that I've seen people lay sideways and put their turntables and mixer on. Looks cool.

Yeah, I dig for records. I do find it to be hard work though and it can be expensive so I don't go very often these days. It's understandable that many beat makers don't. I suppose as long as you can get where you want to with the sample it doesn't really matter which format it came from.

Some nice collections there btw! They all Dwarf my modest bunch!

yup, I dig. But living in a area where there are no records to dig for, I have a hard time getting any. I have a church shop where I live, but it`s only crap. Have found maybe 3-4 records where I sampled something. Then it`s the next town where it`s even more crap (less records), and the third which is also crap. By records I mean they have 20-50 records each, which never get exchanged.

So most of the time, I am digging in my own crates, which I have dug in for the last 15-20 years. daaaaammmmnnnnn.....
And they are not filled with to much gold, but I still manage to flip something.

My girlfriend is polish, her aunt died a few years ago, so her father (aunt`s brother) inherited some records, I went through all of them, and still have the one`s that didn`t sound like complete garbage. Want to do some digging there, but always too much family stuff going on. Some day...

I feel ya man. All record shops are extinct on this island. Only antiques shops and the annual record convention is how I dig, also through online shops.

I'm lucky with garbage diggin' though, I be finding stacks in public and private trash cans and I haven't checked them in over 9 years, so I dig through that.

Was there in `05, nice place. Stayed a little south on the island, in Caribe Playa beach resort. Celebrated new years eve in/around Ponce. can`t really remember, to much drinks/other things, ha ha. Went to San Juan, party and casino`s. I remember going in the old town, finding some record stores. But mostly antiques

Anyway, I always find something to keep me going. Been a few times I was thinking of just buying piles of records from people who sell them cheap, but I already did that, and I`m not really getting rid of the crap either. Not that I try either.
