sample from 7" ? EDIT.: General digging questions

i am jused to ol jamaica 7" pressings and the quality/sound is often quite crappy

iam asking now cuzi am digging for soul etc and thining bout buying LOT`S off ebay

so is it maybe NOT recomendet to get 7"es for diggin because of bad sound pressing?

Bad quality is not inherent to a 7". Some of them can sound better than an LP release because they're spinning at a higher speed. With that higher speed you can get more noticeable surface noise though. Some 7"s were not pressed on real vinyl; many are beat up because it was rare for people to keep them in their sleeves.

There's nothing 'bad' about them, it just depends on its condition and the manufacturing process, just like any other record.

A) E-digging vs Vinyl digging


BESIDES the BEATS factor wich i am quite aware of
would you peeps say sampling instruments like violins/bass/mallets etc etc is automatically a much better sound/quality (i dont speak about cleannes) on vinyl compared to rip stuff from mp3?

because i ve got nuff to sample drums from and have also lots of vinyl samples allready
but if the sound doesnt differ really for instruments in comparison, i wouldnt dig so much for records in that purpose



B) can you guys recomend really cool mystic/spiritual stuff to sample from? (Sun Ra springgs to mind

as well as What artists/records etc are lots and good MALLETS to find on? (xylophone,vibraphone,balafon etc etc)
for vibra i found LIONEL HAMPTON supposed to be a master in !? any word on that? any more names to watch out for?




C) copyright.... i dont wanna get hit by some flowers lawyer one day telling me to pay the rights on some sample i used for 2k$ (not saying that i would get in such a comercial noticeable light)

BUT is it SAFE to use single STABZ, while trying to leave loops alone? and play own melodies from those stabz?




the (funny... or rather not so funny) thing is, i just recived my mpc 1k a week ago (have oldschool knowledge of samplers)
but 3 days ago my MAIN MUSIC / SAMPLE - LIB drive died........ i lost ALL my samples collected over the years (mostly professional libraries)
and while i am about to get the essential most important stuff back, i figuerd to take this situation as a new beginning and start sampling again much more than using too much professional libraries...

so i wann adig for mad instrument samples and expecially STABZ (like orchestra) now... like all kinds of Mallets, choirs,mystical sounds, etc etc

any good recomendations for those would be highly apreciated
i am totaly after the "SHAOLIN SOUL" series on vinyl.... but they go expensive if showing up at all
while i have them all on digital format, i was wondering to just go for the artists on these samplers

A) I E-dig sometimes, but honestly it way easier to mix and master something straight from vinyl so I think it sounds way better in the end. Sometimes with E-digging you get horrible rips where you lose a lot of the frequencies in the original recordings.


B) I can't think of spiritual stuff off the top of my head, but I have a ton of it (sorry its early here), but check Bobby Hutcherson out on Blue Note records. He was a Vibraphone player and put out some real dope records. I know on some albums Cannonball Adderly had Vibes backing him.... Ummmm.... That is all I can think of off the top of my head.

Basically look in jazz. That is where you will find the best vibes, and marimba stuff. Good luck.
