Built Vinyl Storage in Closet

Hey Guys,

I recently painted and rearranged a few things and I was in need of some sort of efficient storage for my vinyl.

I had some vinyl sitting on the shelf of my closet when I also realized that I needed to make better use of my closet space as well. That's when I got my aha moment.

I decided to build storage space in the closet for the bulk of my records so I took some measurements, went to home depot, picked up supplies and got started.


So here is what my closet looked like before:




Here is the material after being cut then painted:





This is what the closet looked like after installing the additional storage shelves:




And here is the end result:




Total cost in materials was approximately $20 not including paint and painting supplies.

Tools needed were: Skilsaw, miter saw, handsaw, sander, and hand drill.

I've got a closet just like that in the room where I get down and most of my vinyl is in the basement which sucks. That's a good idea. Hahahaahahahaha....my wife's gonna love this. I can just hear her now...."ANOTHER PROJECT!!!!"

its not stable, not enough support on the bottom.....just a matter of time before you hear a big BOOM

looks good but it also looks like it may fail if loaded with records. You should really place at least one support either from the center to the floor or a 2x4 under the last shelf from left to right. Right now it looks like most of the stress is going to be on the screws that are holding the top of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd shelf to the vertical panels.

On the ikea shelves all the applied stress transfers to the floor. On his shelves the stress is only distributed to the boards he has fastened to the wall. Im not knocking it....it looks good but it will most likely fail.

Well to me, it looks stable for the records you got now. But the more recs you collect, the more stress you'll build on them shelves. I would put metal braces.

Originally I had filled the entire space with vinyl from end to end and it held for years, but when I actually decided to build the additional space I realized there wasn't much holding up the shelf other than the wood fastened to the wall.

I am concerned but I did use a stud finder and placed 2 1/2" nails into the studs. I figure the particle board shelving would give out before the wood fastened to the wall does. I'm still planning to add support, I just might place some shelving vertically on the ends and the middle of the lower closet.

I have two of these and can vouch that they are great for storing LPs.

yep I own 3, they hold up just fine. There are a ton of dowels in it that make it fairly sturdy. If you really want it to be strong use carpenters glue when you assemble it.
