Digging in Cairo

Anyone ever dug in Egypt? Looking for Arabic, Turkish stuff -- localized releases of Western artists. Pretty much anything. Give me some tips.

Bloke I know regularly travels round Africa crate digging - a few times he's gone to small towns with radio stations and paid the DJ to tell people that he's buying records. A few hours later and he usually has at least 60-70 people each with a stack of records.

Some of the weirdest, rarest and dopest records I've ever heard have come out of that man's crates.

Good Luck Bro. I've been to Kuwait. Oman, Bahrain and Qatar with no such luck finding any vinyl.

Yes, but Gulf countries do not have the same musical history as Egypt. Umm Kulthom, Abdel Halim Hafiz -- so many musicians of the past 100 years in Egypt. They also do not/did not have the same openness toward music.

Umm Kulthom used to do shows in France on national television. It was a different world . . .

Turkey and Iran are a hotbed for some great records. You've got some fun bootlegs of stuff too -- Iranian releases of James Brown records and whatnot. I'm not giving up hope.

The only thing I know is that in the middle east, they consider funk, soul and RnB as pop music aside from their traditional stuff. So go straight to the pop section and dig.

also, in cairo, keep an eye out for a few belly dance records (70's best of course) often lots of open percussion and some good sounds sometimes.

looking at the lablels again, i notice that toward the end of the 70's early 80's keyboards/synths get incorporated into the sound and it has a different vibe. Ive not got any fayza ahmed myself but have heard snippets - ill dig outa link

thats not a bad clip, gives you a good impression of the general sound of that era/region
