Is this collection worth it.....

I am interested in purchasing this entire collection at approx £2 each.

I'm very new to digging, in fact this would be my first purchase so I wanted to invest in a large collection to get me started.

What are your thoughts?

lol I wasn't too sure why the Curtis Mayfield album is listed at £850. Either way, all the records will work out at £2 each so the entire collection for approx £1360.

To my mind, no it isn't that great a deal. Almost everything listed is fairly common, has already been sampled numerous times over the years and in most cases has been issued on CD. Of course a vinyl sample is always preferable but there's just too much on that list can be had for less.

If you have that much to spend on records just pace it and hit up second hand shops, garage sales, thrift stores. I would every now and then pay for a sealed or near mint copy of some of those records at those prices but pro rated across the whole collection it's too expensive for what's on offer.

I don't know whether this is a good deal or not but I'd listen to the two who've already commented.

When you say digging, do you mean digging for sampling material or digging to have a vinyl collection?

If it's to build a decent record collection then dropping this sort of money isn't a bad idea as it will bolster any new collection.

If however you wanna dig to find good sampling material, I'd follow Metatron's advice to a tee. Just go locally (charity shops, car boot sales, weird hippie places that have a barter area or something) and drop £10-£20 a time. You're gonna buy a lot of shit records to begin with but as long as you go for artists you've heard of and cool album sleeves (as a general rule I don't buy anything with a white person with a moustache on the front), you should be fine.

I've probably spent £100 over a year and a half and have about 250 records, approximately 40 of which I've still not listened to.

AND this way you get to touch the records and see it all in person before you buy!

I would be looking to buy them more for sampling rather than an actual collection. This will be my first venture at sampling vinyl so I am not too bothered as to whether the stuff has been sampled before. I would be using it more for practice and trying to perfect the art of sampling.

I agree that £2 per record is expensive. The seller has now offered 680 records at £1020 (£1.50) and I'm still reluctant. I might offer £850 (£1.25) and if he goes for it then I'll cop them. I reckon £1.25 per record is reasonable.

Turned out the Curtis Mayfield album is priced at £850 as it is a genuine signed copy and that would NOT be in the collection.

Keep diggin the old fashioned way. Not too many rare cuts in this list that would make me want to part with that much cash. You might end up regreting it, then stuck with them. Many have them have been rinsed, sample wise.

I recommend not to buy a whole collection. There are some nice albums for listening AND sampling in this collection (the ones I saw are sampled already but thats ok IMO cause if it was sampled before you know that the SOUND is ok and you can always find a "never used before" part on those LPs) but also a lot of stuff you might find really bad,boring,shitty whatever.. I wouldn't want to pay for stuff I never listen to or sample

I didn't find anything special/rare/obscure in this collection wich is ok if you don't look for samples/sounds that are completly unknown.


IMO any collection is worth any price. It always depends on what YOU are willing to pay. Because only you know if you like the collection or not. There are records out there that some people are willing to pay hundreds of dollars although I wouldn't buy it even when it cost 5$ (of course I would but not to listen or sample it but to sell it )

agreeing with almost all the responses here...digging involves dirt and is almost free.

if you have to ask about spending that kind of cash on something, you probably shouldn't do it.

that's like buying a whole zoo because you want to go hunting. baller, sure, but not smart.

Nice collection of records. I saw a bunch of older Reggae albums I'd like to get... Uroy, Pinchers.
I even saw one of Twista's first 12"s as Tung Twista.

To me the beauty of diggin is the possibility of finding that genuine signed Curtis Mayfield album in a Salvation Army for $2 on your lunch break.
