Talk and share knowledge on rare records, sources of new samples, vinyl, diggin, etc

Hi everyone,

I remember having seen a documentary or a feature in which different producers discuss Bob James' Nautilus. They talk about the fact that every part of the song is sampleable, about the use of drugs in the 70's and if I'm not mistaking, 9th wonder talks about the fact that Nautilus is like a rite of passage for every producer.

Problem is, I don't remember where I've seen this ! And I've been breaking my head over it for days. I don't remember a title and it doesn't come up on youtube when looking for different combinations of "bob james" "nautilus" "documentary" "sampling" "9th wonder" etc ...

Any help would be highly appreciated!
Thanks a lot in advance,

Paul.

Well I think they show his picture at a certain point, but I don't think they interview him because one person talks about him using drugs while he made the track and that's the reason why there are so many crazy parts in there etc ... so I don't think Bob James would've liked that part ...

I just did some research on vimeo but nothing comes up.
I don't think the whole video was about Nautilus though, it's just a part. I've been going through some documentaries about sampling (like copyright criminals or good copy bad copy) but can't seem to find it.

Do you remember anything else that could help in a google search?

Thanks again,
Paul.

man.. what you are talking about rings a bell.. but the one I mentioned above was bob in it. He was talking about owning his masters and how the tape could degrade I believe.. and he also talked about his feelings on how his music became a huge part of hip hop... how at first he wasn't happy about the sampling, then it grew on him.. and how he couldn't understand what made the break so appealing etc..

yeah you're talking about the interview he did with mixery raw deluxe:
http://mixeryrawdeluxe.tv/node/2900

they also talk about biz markie and his "bell-less" version of the mardi gras break etc ... but unfortunately that's not the piece i'm looking for =)

but i'm glad what i'm saying rings a bell because i was starting to wonder if i dreamed the whole thing up ! if you've got any other info about the other piece, let me know !

i'm looking into it but I don't think so to be honest ...
i also thought of the complex TV series, but it ain't that either ...
i skipped through "the tanning of america" cause I thought I saw it in there but it ain't that either ...

i contacted 9th wonder over twitter but ain't got no reply yet ...

not to be confused with the video of Bob telling Biz he reckons he's full of shit re the masters.

Soemoen said once that K-Def supplied Biz with the break that was EQ'd with the quiet bells, on a side note, while i was looking for this, i read that Kanye has been given all of STAX' mulittrack recordings?

hi peeping tom,

that's the mixery raw deluxe interview i mentioned in my earlier post, but that's not what i'm looking for. i'm actually looking for a piece without bob james himself in it, but where different people (of which 9th wonder) discuss his work and nautilus in particular. it's not a raw interview either, it's edited and part of a nice looking feature.

thanks for the help, but we're not there yet unfortunately ...

yo mr debauch, you were closer than i was man !

i just found it, it's not a red bull music interview, but it's a guitar center interview session with 9th wonder, pete rock, just blaze, dj revolution etc ... and the setting looks exactly like a red bull music interview, so you were really close ! i guess in my memories i linked it to a nicely produced documentary, but i was wrong =) but all the things i remembered they said are in there, so it's definitely what i was looking for !

anyway, here it is, for all y'all enjoyment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_Z1tz83pn8?t=30s

thanks for all the help,
peace,
p.
