so i was thinkning about diggin for cd's more.

I was thinking that i might switch from sampleing primarily vinyl to sampling cd's. I think with all the small time cd releases you can find some really cool rare stuff. I just pulled a sick conga loop off of a local christian artists cd from the mid nineties. Does anyone here sample off of mostly cd's?

Be prepared! Some cats can get real salty when you start talking about sampling from sources other than vinyl in this forum, but back to the subject. I agree that sampling off cd's is a good idea, I use some cd's if it's easier to find than the vinyl, and sometimes tight ish can be found on cd that's not available on vinyl. Keep doing your thing, no matter what as long as it sounds good it doesn't matter where it comes from.

I love vinyl, but I got a cd turntable and I say whatever you want to sample from is cool, who is going to know? Sample from whatever. if its dope, its dope, f*ck what they say, do whatcha like

yup nothing wrong with cds use whateva u want i personally like using records but have used cds in the past.

if its working for u then go for it.

ive sampled some random cds that my mom has, like those relaxing cds they sell at kmart. It is a really crisp sound, expecially when your used to sampling from vinyl through a 50 dollar broken mixer. But straight up I just like using vinyl more, somethin bout diggin through piles of dusty records.

What's the fun in sampling from cd's?

You don't go digging for cd's. When you go out digging for records most cats don't have portable record players, so the surprise is waiting until you get home to find out what gem you just found. Luckily I have a portable, and know what I'm getting myself into before buying the record, but back when I didn't have it, I had to just guess by looking at the record, year, and who the artists were on that record to determine if it was good or not.

Also, if you have a CD that is rubbish, what do you do with it? throw it away right? The people who sample more from vinyl, and are more collectors of vinyl have a hard time throwing vinyl away if it's crap. I have a few crates of junk, but I know I'll get back around to going through it again, and probably finding something that my ear didn't hear the first time.

Not bashing on CD samplers, but just my two cents from the vinyl collecting perspective...

well digging for vinyl has been fun, records have that certain mystique.
I have just been eying cd's lately because of how many are out there, especially newer stuff and underground wierd stuff plus man i see cd's now for like buck or two all the time. Plus i kind of like that idea of having something that is very disposable high sound quality and nice and small, when i buy a cd i throw away the case and just put the cd in a cd book. My vinyl takes up so much space (I have around three hundred cd's right now in three cd books that take up about as much space as only 30 records. Plus being able to go diggin for cd's with a discman is nice.

You can dig for cd's, you just can't open up new ones that are wrapped up, but at my local shop you can't open up new vinyl either.
I also have a portable turntable so this is a mute point.

I throw away rubbish vinyl as well as cds.

I think both have there place and I would never completely stop diggin for vinyl, i just think cds are worth a serious look, while everyone else is searching for vinyl at my local shop Ill be over there in the cd section all alone. plus i am a pizza guy so i can grab a huge stack of cd's and drive around in my car searching through the day's buy.

Ok I have decided I am gonna take the leap and if it doesn't work out then I will pretend that it never happend.

That's cool, I wasn't expecting you to try to prove me wrong that CD's are better. People will sample from what they're going to sample from regardless of who thinks which one is "wack".

I am not trying to convince you that cds are better, I was just relaying the thoughts that have been making me think more about cd's. I think vinyl is great the crackles and slight hiss give the sample a nice atmosphere. My 1200 isn't going anywhere. I would like to pick up a cdx though.

i sample off CD's primarily.

same way i sample off tape/vcr/dvd/vinyl/cd : it's just a sound or lick that you're after.

if you want the vinyl sound than there are plenty of processors and plug-ins that recreate well enough.

anyone whos bias one way needs to check their head and get out of the locker room

there are plenty of rare CD's as well > the Puma 45's are on a limited edition CD with bonus tracks (a big + in my book) as well as imports that don't see a vinyl release or CD singles that have extended mixes that don't see vinyl.

digging is digging but why keep with what everyone else is doing : went outta style in 95, DJ shadow got big and now everyone wants to be a DJ producer.

keep with your original idea and see what you need to fufill it.

and if the 'clean unorganic' CD sound upsets you > record the leader and the end of some wax and loop it > run it as a channel in your mix and process it...

Vinyl or c.d....it doesn't matter there are pros and cons for each.But i find alot of times i use cd's because they're easy to find(as far as older stuff).And fairly cheap.But there's nothin' like goin' to a record store for half the day and comin' out with that gem.

Exactly. I guess I have more of an addiction to collecting records Vs. CD's. I rarely even buy CD's. Most stuff I get now, I just buy on vinyl, and then transfer it to a CD to play in my car.

Yeah, why keep doing what everyone else is doing? That's almost impossible. If everyone is sampling from vinyl/CD's and you're doing it too, then how are you doing anything different? Might as well go download Fruity Loops, and call yourself a "producer"...
