Do the records matter?

There seems to be alot of varying schools of thought on this subject, im of the opinion if u start off with a dope sample u have more chance of making some heat as opposed to tryna flip some 80's casio cheese record into a banger.

Yeah, I mean check out some of DOOM's productions. He flips some cheesy azz sh!t, and comes out dope in the end.

the other day i made 3 completely differant style beats with one record......and actually all samples from the same song!......it was a piano solo record.

So I think it is in the record, but also in the skill. Because both people can have the same record and flip it differantly. Whos beat is gonna be better? whoever flips it better.

cyrus I agree with u but i must re-itterate the need to find inspiring source material as a pre- requisite.

cos if the record is horrible to listen to u probalby aint gonna be interested enuf in the sound to bother flipping it in the 1st place.

I have this one record with lots of ethical syntar type stuff.....nice clean breaks, but no matter what, i cant seem to flip it.

It's not the record, it's the producers ear.
Althought good records do help.

I'm convinced that Zone can make an ill beat from just about anything.
Check the sample f.a.q. for J-zone and you will get no results.
That's because nobody can recognize his samples cuz he flips em so good.

heavysound I agree j-zone is tuff and probably can and does make track out of anything.

Respect to peeps that can do that, but me personally I respect producers that dont sample certain things because it is not in keeping with their musical taste's.

Thats my main thing, cos alot of the best hip hop producers and I mean legends like Premo, Pete rock, Rza their musical taste comes thru in their music to the point where if u hear a piece of music u will say to urself " that sounds like a premo sample or that sound like a rza sample"

HHmmmmm...... some valid points
But still i think that more than the record it's the producers style.
I can recognize Primo beats because of his style not his choice of samples.
I still trip out every time I see that car commercial with the Screamin Jay Hawkins song that is in 3/4 time and Primo flipped it for Biggies Kick in The Door and he made it into 4/4 time. I think Primo could sample Mary Friggin Poppins and everyone would still be like "is that a Primo beat?"
