When you guys are listening to records do you guys play the whole record, or do you guys skim through the record? Just curious...

i always play shit that i buy all the way through. I usally play records when im working on the computer. And just make mental notes of songs that i want to sample. I devote a day to just listening to my purchases. Then when i sit down to make a track i know what im going to use.

depends, most of the time all the way through, sometimes I'll listen at 45.

oh yeah i do that alot. But when i first get my records i listen to them all. Like when i come back from diggin. I dont buy that bargin bin shit though so the music i listen to is shit i enjoy anyways. Like stuff i would play in the whip or while djing. But when like i say to myself i need horns, ill know what record has the right mood and key of what i need. so i just get right up on the sample.

If its some sh*t I'm not really into, I'll skim through. But if its something like Kool & The Gang or Ronnie Foster, I will most likely listen to the whole record. I listen to that kind of stuff, even when I am not maing beats.

Lately I been trying listen to records that I wouldn't normally listen to for pleasure.

it depends if it's music i'm going to buy to spin at a gig i skim threw. but if it stuff i buy to make beats i listen to all, first when i buy it and bring it home i skim threw it but later when i'm just kickin it and boxin my ollady i just sit in the studio and listen to my records .
i listen to all types of music so it dont matter , i listen to the musicians and how they interact with one another and the drummer listen how he breaks down and try to keep count with him.
but it's easy to say but hard as phuck to do.especailly on a drum machine or when i dont know sht about music. you dig

If it's some random record that I don't know anything about, I skim the beginning and end of each song (plus those "dark" groove spots in the vinyl) just looking for drums or open instuments.
If it sounds like something I'd like, then I'll listen all the way through.....or songs that sound like they might have a hidden break, I'll listen all the way through.
