i need to start diggin

theres plenty of places i know like charity shops and obviously record shops, even ebay

does any of you have any tips like what i should look out for and expect to pay? should i buy on impulse or check records out first??

Go somewhere cheap and impulse. At $1 a pop an impulse buy can yield great rewards. and if it sucks, you're only out $1.

welcome to the DITC club well,inorder to pop that cherry you need to kno what type of music you like and what your going to do with it,

see i dig for music for my pleasure of listening to great music,2nd i dig for samples.

alot of the music i have is because i heard it before sometime in my life as a child, mostly funk/ soul/oldies then there's the classic breaks i dig for also thats for sampling and to listen to as well,

i dj too so theres another reason i dig so that i can have music for party's

if you start diggin you can get caught up in by vinyl real fast, it becomes an addiction, try going to a record store first and digg threw there as you will see stuff of quality get familar with what your buying and looking at then you can go to the dollar bins and digg there, it harder to dig in the bins then at record stores because at bins you really have to have an idea of what your looking for as goes for the record store but they have thers in order so it much easier to think of a name and just go look,

ebay is good too but your going to pay big there, thats last resort if you can't find it in the bins or at the store then ebay will have it ,but be prepared for stickere shock.

the price range is different according to record at record stores you can pay grip if your not carefull, dolar bins well you pay a dollar per record.

just get an idea of what you want to listen to and then by that record.

if your lookin for drums then rock, soul, funk. is your best bet

for strings theres records that specailize in that called 101 strings, but also try classical, orchetra, synphony.

loops you can find anywhere all types of music.



another thing if your just starting off i advice you to buy good msuic first to start off your collection be cause you'll get tired of the stuff you sample for just sounds i've seen it

I've been digging for about 4 years now...I almost never buy on impulse. I love to listen to the entire record before I purchase. But, where I get my records, they have a .50 cent section and a record player. I usually come up with stacks of about 30-50 vinyls. I listen, I select my "definite" buys, and then I continue my search. I dig for about 3-5 hours...Then, my work is done for the week...Now it's time to flip some beats....I'm out...PEACE

As someone who can't walk past a charity shop without going in, heres my rant:

Watch out in the charity shops. I nearly end up wanting to strangle the little old women that work in them cos they've no idea how little things are worth. You will find big piles of scratched Perry Como records priced at 3 pounds 4 pounds 5 pounds. 12" White labels priced at £3??? WTF??

OK, so you might get a super-cool record for 2 or 3 quid. But that only happens one time in 20.

But it's not all bad. There are some charity shops with really cool little old women, where the records are 50p LP 20p single. When I was doing my rant to one of them about Oxfam taking the piss with their prices she just turned around to me and said:

"We're not paying anyone 6 figure salaries"!!!"We're not paying for Executive Lunches"

Most charity shops are just fronts for charities badly run by high earners. Ok so the little old women aren't bad, they're vollunteering but lets face it, what do they know about the true value of things. Fuk all.

What annoys me most is the way they just slap different prices on all the records without any consideration for what it is. If they see one they recognise like Abba for instance, they stick a fiver on it.

What they want to do, is sell all records 50p each or 10 for £3.

That way they would SHIFT STOCK and MAKE MONEY FOR THE CHARITY. Now I'm no Donald Trump, but I know it would make sense.

But they're nice little old ladies really. Just like our grandmas.

i feel u on that acidsid. what i dont understand is why they charge so much if they didnt pay for it's given to them donation, not just the records everything in those and salvation army,

yeah like you said if they would put a descent price on stuff more stock would cycle thru.


dont kno what you guys ,i dont kno your currency, but some time i find some fuc*d up records that they wont go down on the price plus they chagre you double for a double album, ive gotten in to it with some ladies cause of that some places have change that policy.


what you do on records that are price'd high you peel the sticker off or change it with a cheaper one ,
i did that with a jr walker album that was 7 bucks i took the sticker off and they asked me did you see aproce on this , i told them no, she said aaah i'll give it to you for a dollar, hell yeah score vinyl was clean a small sleeve separation, i was diggin for that record for some time,

you got to learn some tricks of the trade

Forgot to add my main point that, while charity shops are doing good for poor people the world over, they should also exist to sell cheap goods to people without much money in their area.

Remember their rents are very small/often nonexistent, they employ volunteers and a couple of quid/bucks is enough to feed someone in the 3rd world for a week.

Oh and by the way i would never strangle a little old lady, I was just angry.

yeah they wierd but i mostly see women, one time this gay dude that work'd at one i when to was puting prices on stuff i pick'd up this kenwood tape player "oldschool" i had just thrown mine out because it was hella oldbut the one i pick'd up from the thrift store was clean and in great condition anyways this dude was flamein he was all you like thati look'd at him he took the tape player and slash it down to 9$ from 40$,
dude scared me but sh!t i walk out with a killer deck.

yep i can confirm that its all old christian bitches and wierdos for the most part. i used to work at this other shop thats near by, didn't make shit for $ but i would be laughin all day at workers and customers alike. plus i got mad records cheap/free, brand new atari in box with 20 games for $5. console and controllers both had the plastic film on dem bitches. i used to walk outta that place wit all sorts a shit.

ok i'm no expert but i've been digging quite some time and i know how to maximize quality without ending up with a shitload of mantovani crap.

first of all, don't go digging in record stores until you know what you're doing. most places know how to price shit (and often overprice), especially in the soul/funk categories, but they also tend to sleep on some more obscure stuff that's really cool. for example, off the record in san diego will price anything from the 70s with a funky looking black dude on the cover in the 15-30 dollar range, yet i pulled out a copy of tonto's expanding head band's "zero time" from their bargain bin. or recently last weekend i found virginia belmont's "birds" record for seven dollars at amoeba.

second of all, don't pull stickers off or switch records. that's some real pussy moves. if you don't wanna pay the price, get a better job or find it cheaper. and if they catch you you're likely to get banned or worse, i heard of certain places following shady customers outside and showing them what's up.

third, thrift stores...most of the shit on major labels has already been sampled, check for local/private press stuff. usually it's the more interesting stuff there anyway. even some of the weird christian stuff has sample moments.

fourth, get yourself on soulseek and download cool music. that'll save you the most money, and **** anyone who says that ain't digging. not everyone has the money/room for scratched up dollar bin shit.

lastly, look for spots where they really don't know how to price the records. estate sales, libraries, etc. i've recently pulled out coke escovedo's "comin at ya", some idris muhammad, and a copy of the la clave record on verve (each for a dollar) at a local spot that i'm not telling anyone about, because they get new stock in every day and don't know what the hell it is.
