Talk and share knowledge on rare records, sources of new samples, vinyl, diggin, etc

Be honest....

how many people sift through every track on the record...get discouraged because it sounds like garbage...and throw the shit in the crate before u hear it all?

this is a bad habit of mine...

usually i'll grab like 10 out of the dollar bin every week and since the guy knows me he'll only charge me 5 bucks, which means i have incentive to get large quantities of ANYTHING that catches my eye everytime...so when I get everything home, I'm just impatient and I throw something to the side when there very well could be a Pharcyde - Runnin bar or two about to pop up....

my question is...

Does anyone else have this Crate Diggin anxiety? Or do you all listen to the ENTIRE record, side 1 before side 2?

That's the position I'm in right now. I find that if I don't listen to my records for a while, if I go back to them, even the stuff I sampled before, I hear it with new ears, and different things appeal to me to sample. I haven't bought a single record in about 4 months, and haven't been hardore digging in a very long time.

It's also happened that records I thought were garbage, I pulled out and listenend to a year later, and found some heat.

My advice is to just keep doing what your doing. Experience tells me you won't be able to get them good deals forever. The well will run dry, so take advantage of it while you can, and keep all those joints your getting even if you think they are wack now, cause they may not be wack to you later on down the road.

word that is tru^^ this is just a habit of mine to skim thru a record, i take mental notes in my head, and listen for certain sounds.

ok on this track theres this on this track theres that.

then when i got time in the morning when i'm cookin breakfast or doing something that requires music listening time ,i put on a record and listen totally and take notes on all tracks and listen hader to the ones i made mental notes of; cause i 'll try to find something else in that track.

but it's just a habit cause i'm a dj and thats how i scam thru records at the store.

don't trip you get better the more you do it.....

i seen this poster today at pg&e it said

dig safe, know what to look for! ....thats my new motto

i listen to about three records each night. i listen to them all the way thru and if i hear something i like, i sample it. then when i got about 700mb on my cf i burn a sample cd. this is how i make sure i alot time for listening and building my library. i really like the routine, twist somtin up, put the headphones on, vibe out, sweet dreams.

edit: i used to skim my records but since i've switched up my method i realize how easy it is to "skim" right past some heat. i'll never go back to the skim method unless there is a specific sound i am lookin for and i know what record its on or somtin like that.

I'm with pad-ophiliac ^^^^^ I've adopted the listen to about three or four records in a night routine. All the time I'm choppin' anything that sounds good. You gotta put the work in if you wanna get the results. I've heard it said before and I completely agree "A good producer is a good listener".

I only skip through records when I cop (Learn to read grooves noobs! :D )
ya might wanna check it out if its a rare piece and you're trying to figure out if there is some scuff or scratch responsible for this minty looking ash ra temple.. having a 2 euro tag...

Just sometimes I come past some unknown shyt that totally blows my mind on spot. I normally listen to the entire joint again & then start waving my arms and dance around lie mad making everyone in the joint feel hella strange

Naw,...Its just like real hunting.

You pick up the trail, find it, aim, shoot, eat at home
I normally get the headblasts about dopeness at home.
I listen to my LPs too often though & spoil the special loops :(
P.S.:Wheres my anime OSTs from JAPAN??? HUH, POSTMAN???

Yeah I'm really picking up on these methods you guys are throwin out there.

DJ E.d.E - that's dope that you take notes while you're listening...i'm going to add that intricacy into my process. I'm pretty fresh into beatdiggin so I haven't evolved to that stage yet, but I think I'll force it now....

i used to skim my records but since i've switched up my method i realize how easy it is to "skim" right past some heat. i'll never go back to the skim method unless there is a specific sound i am lookin for and i know what record its on or somtin like that.

this is the exact paragraph I was wondering if someone would type...thanks man, no more skimming for me.
