Buying a new cartridge for sampling

I'm in the market for something new that'll give me better sound than the Shure cartridge I currently have.

onyx cartridge...psh. i love needledoctor, though. real audiophiliacs know. i was lookin at some grados a while back, but figured if the rest of my rig aint up to par and im playin thrift store vinyl, it aint worth it. one day though...

what model shure do you have now?

i have 44-7s for the dj setup, which i'll use for the sampling as well, but i recently picked up a m97xe for archiving my vinyl...with better sound quality, theres usually a trade off for durability. i think i'm willing to sacrifice so i can actually backspin to cue up my sounds.

its really up to you and how you want your sounds. plenty of people sample with their pt01s and handytraks, and those needles come standard.

Like you, I use 447s still back from when I was heavy into cutting. I thought about getting the 97XE for sampling. But after reading a bit about it I wasn't sure so just decided to stick with the 447 a bit longer.

How does the M97XE sound to you, compared to the M447?

im also in the market for a new cartridge....was lookin at some ortofons but the website is kinda confusing and doesnt really tell you shit about each model....could anybody help me out like what i should be lookin for n shit...word thanks

i have one ortofon and i use that for scratchin but i got 4 track matsersan old set the orange ones then the ones that come in a little anvil case i really dig those i use them for everything , to mix and to play records, and they have a very clean sound, i hear people say they sound to metalic sounding but thats because they dont know how to use tan eq. i get great sound frommy needles i also have a set of needles and cart.s that i built about 18 years ago i used a pickering cart, and a staton dj needle from radio shack and they sound really good, i use have to replace the stylus so i dont use it anymore.

but like i said its all in the taste.

i just got the m97xe, so i havent even mounted it yet. i got it cause supposedly its got a real flat sound, IMO, good for archival purposes. also, i got a good deal on it from amazon. im not planning on sampling with em, unless it ends up sounding much better...i just want to record my vinyl to wav to use with serato, eventually.

compared to the 44-7s, i'm assuming the output level will be less, and the coloration in the sound for the highs and lows (especially) will be less as well...since they are dj carts. i'm just goin on what i've read from specs and other users' experience. i'll let you know when i try em out side by side.

how will you be using the cart? scratching/djing, sampling, hi-fi, archiving, etc??
i'm sure that for sampling, this issue has been addressed before in this forum, just search.

i'd suggest that you just go with what you can afford. like i said, i've seen plenty of people sample off their portables, and those needles can't be too high-end. i don't have much experience with ortofons. i know their sound quality is pretty highly-regarded as far as dj carts go, however, theyre fairly heavy & expensive, which is why i never went with them. i've also used some stantons before i got my shures (never looked back)

I think the new ortofon qbert cart is interesting for the dj/producers.

11mV (shure m44-7 is 9.5mV) output with ortofon quality and excellent tracking!!!

Did anyone ever try keeping a real fukced up needle to experiment with it?
For example have a fukced up needle for sampling low freqs like basslines..
