How do you know if it's rare?

Do you look on a website, or a magazine? Or is it just someone saying it randomly?

Rare does not mean = Good.

Mostly by experience I know if somethings rare. After a while you can recognize the facts that make out most rare lps.
Certain Items are not really rare, just great music and therefore alot of ppl bid on it on ebay, bam the price rockets by 25%.

Otherwise joints can be rare if they are privately pressed by a small company that didnt spread the wax all over the globe. So you might find one area crowded with these releases. This normally results in ppl not living in that area paying 'good' money since its impossible to get for them if they dont live there.

There are also lots of other reasons like, damaged stocks reducing the entire stock to a minimum making the remaining Lps worth alot more.

If you have no clue about this, just go digging by heart and stomach. You'll get there.

I'm sure there's a site that can tell you how many copies of a particular album were printed, but I don't know of one. If one exist, I'm sure someone will be by to post it.

I would say the best, unofficial way to find out if a piece is rare, is to recall how often, if ever, you've seen it before. But experience is required for that method. You could also check various websites that sell used records. If you don't see it anywhere, it could be rare.

Without access to the info... date originially printed, # of copies printed, if there were reprints or reissues, ect... you can't know for sure unless you have the experience of digging throught the country for X number of years.

i think also if your lookin for an OR and theres many represses on it orthe OG goes for abunch of loot then it can be rare and like somone said to it all depends on how good it was, musically.

If you don't know it is rare you still have a lot to learn, my advice is focus on discovering new stuff, a lot of great records are dead cheap and still unnoticed either because they were mass produced and they are so common nobody bothers to listen to them or they are not in style today but they will be next month. Do check popsike if you sell not if you buy. I have paid over 200 for a vinyl, not a lot compared others, but I have been buying for over 30 years. I used to have a ball shopping in the US before you guys wake up. If you want to buy rare stuff today, go to Tokyo. good luck. jean
