Sampling - Are there "moral" Limitations for you?

Many Producers have their own Laws from what they are digging, Shadow for example tries only to sample original records, no re-issues and re-issue complications, a lot of other beat-makers only sample records that are older than may be 20 Years... other Producers like Kanye do sample everything that sounds cool to them from cds to records which have been sampled to death.

So where starts the "Art of diggin" for you?- theoretically - cause a lot of People are limitied through the money that they have to pay for "famous" samples

I think this is an old Issue, but it would be interessting what you think of it...

I try to take stuff out of context and make something new with it. It's easy to loop up an old funk / soul record but, sometimes, making something hot out of some old cr@p that nobody really knows or cared for is more rewarding.

That said, it's all about the mood you're in when making the beat. Sometimes, simple loops can be great. Things would have been a lot more creative and open in the professional sampling world but for The Turtles / De La type stuff.

As for the source, I definitely prefer the sound of vinyl but will sample anything that I can hear. Like to collect originals but, again, will sample anything if I can make it sound good.

no limits for me...cds, vinyls...originals, re-issues whatever..even when i started out, people used to send me mp3s just because i wanted to really learn the whole craft and around the time i couldn't afford an mpc due to unemployment..so..i only used what i was able to afford or find.

now, i just use anything i can find..if the sample has been hacked to death many times, i try to make it different from all the other versions even if it takes a week to figure it out.

with sampling in general, i try out everything with it till it doesn't sound like it came from the original record...and most of the time it comes from the most odd/irregular sound on a song...if i loop a sample, i won't take it from the 1st beat, but instead take it on the 3rd...just try ev'thing with it pretty much.

i sample anything, but i have changed something in regards to the way i do things... i used to sample the 'entire song', save it, and then chop from there... now, out of respect for the artist, i've stopped saving the 'entire song' and just chop the certain parts i want (still documenting the artist and original song sampled)... and yes i too prefer vinyl, but again - i won't discriminate...

I sample anything, vinyl, cds, mp3s, tape, dvds, vhs, tv, household items - anything that sounds interesting to me.

no limits, but i am a collector and a dj first then beat maker, but i buy stuff from 20 yrs and past, thats just my perference, i dont really care, if you listen to my music and u like it then i must have done smething right!

This really isn't moral, but I personally never sample records less than 20 years old.

Other than that, I'll sample anything, and so should you...

i try not to sample any actual rappers shit some of these break records out take loops from actual rap songs...lame

70s got everything
80s for sounds mainly and some weird vocals
90s for video games

I feel sort of gulity about sampling Religious records..
Oral Roberts, the Mighty Clouds of Joy etc.
I see tons of those type records at my dig spot.
I will sample Mahalia Jackson though but just a lil.
Thats just me though.

i only sample vinyl. i try to stay w/ original but that doesnt always happen. i will never sample another hiphop producersbeat.. i might sample a voice snippett but not drums or melody from a another producers beat...that to ME is a high crime..you know who you are..at that point why make music just listen to the original...


sampling is so important to the music i make that i cant be so careless to sample just any old thing w/o a care in the world...put a little work in..

although SOUL STREET channel 60 on XM has got some ill sample ish...but it just makes me want to find it on vinyl..im not gonna sample xm...its not a snob thing its just respect to the art...
