What do YOU look for in a Vinyl?

Do you just randomly pick an album and buy it or do you take your time and choose the best possible one outta the bunch?

When digging, i usually go by the the criteria of:

1. what instruments were used?
2. what year the record was released in?
3. what genre?

Although, occassionally ill buy something because its a certian label, artist or just has an inspiring cover!

I'll either go straight off a dope cover, or pick by genre depending on the type of beat I want to do...like soul for a nice funky rider beat or some orchestra/opera stuff for darker beats

jazz is also normally a good pick up.

I shop in all the genres that I like. Pretty much everything. Mostly Soul and Jazz. I pretty much will look at almost every record there. I look for artists and musicians that I am familiar with. I look at the credits to see who played on it. I look for record label and the year it was made.

And sometimes, if the cover is real nice, I won't look at all and I'll just get it.

and sometimes you gotta just go with your gut. i sometimes get impulses to buy a record when i see, and sometimes i find really hot shit in place i wouldnt think would have anything.

Cool covers...that's really all I'm looking for. Then I mean REALLY DOPE covers.

Find musicians whose sound you like, for example Idris Muhammed on the drums. Look on the back of the record to see who is playing each instrument on the record. The singer might be wack but who's playing in the band is the question.

Also look for the instruments that were played on the record like a fender-rhodes keyboard. There might be some rare instruments, and sounds that aren't overused already.

Who produced the record/ who were the songwriters/co-producers
What Musicians are playing on the record
background singers, etc
which record label put it out (chess, chappell, curtom etc.)

and then sometimes I just take a chance

ya cover are a really good way to go, along with jazz records.

i like looking for producers and engineers along with the players on the record. Look from some records with engineer and production credits belonging to Tom Dowd, man is a fing legend.

for stuff i sample i tend not to buy stuff from the 80's-not really into the synths introduced around 78-79 ish, i love the organic feel of the 70's-best period in music pour moi.. 60's stuff is hard to find quality stuff to sample as far as the recording and the pressings, a lot of the stuff from the 70's is pressed, mixed, and mastered really nicely.. a lot of times i disregard anything that doesnt have a reallly cool cover or isnt from the 70's....


but as far as listening, i pick up anything from any period of time, mostly jazz, blue note, impulse, prestige, milestone, and fantasy..i try not to spend more than $25 on a single lp, unless its something i really want...
