Vinyl vs CDs

So what do you ladies and gentleman have to say? Is sampling from CDs any less hip-hop? Do you have any rules regarding this matter?

I prefer vinyl... but if i would have a cdj I could use the cd as if it where vinyl... but I don't...so... rules too this are for narrowminded backpackers....

ive been using vinyl simply because its cheaper. and i like the sound of the vinyl pops and cracks rather than something like izotope vinyl. but yeah, ive sampled cd's. it doesnt matter to me where the sample comes from. its all about the end result.

id say records... but CDs sound cleaner..

but i sttared on records and will keep using records... but if i find a dope CD ill use it.

I sample everything.... as long as the quality isn't too fukked up!

I don't think it matters what you sample from as long as the sample is dope. I'll sample from anything vinyl, cassettes, DVD's, MP3's....

I do love vinyl though cause there is so much oddball stuff out there. With Vinyl you have more of a chance of finding something that other people don't have.

However, after I realized nowadays there are so many MP3's floating around in cyberspace, and a lot of people are putting up their rare vinyl collections into MP3's and putting them out there....I had to invest in a CD turntable.

It's just expanding my repertoire for sounds. I go out and go digging for vinyl every once in awhile, but I also go "Cyber Digging" from the comfort of my own home quite often. I found some great stuff on the net that I never would have found locally.

I say don't discount ANY resources that are available to you. Use them all.

i agree with this. its all about the end result in the end. although i prefer vinyl as well

I'll sample from anything. The thing I like about music is that there are NO rules. You can do whatever you want.

I also prefer sampling form vinyl. (since I'm a collector...)

However, since I copped my 2500, I am kinda impressed at how easy it is to pop in a cd and sample directly from it internally. I have done this once or twice.

But generally, I agree with the "no rules except for make it dope" philosophy when it comes to sampling/beat-making...

yea for some reason i never knew that the 2500 had a cd drive. like wowow no wonder everyone loves the 2500, that shit is mad dope. but for some reason it doesnt have that "love factor" lol, iunno

What I like about about sampling from records is that it is easier to skim through the record. All you is bounce the needle to sections that you may want to hear. When you find something you like, spin it backwards with your hand. CD's are a little more cumbersome in that regard cause you have to do all that button pushing.

Yeah it's way easier to skip through a vinyl record than to skip through an mp3 album in windows media player/ itunes/ whatever. And vinyl also has a special sound that you can't just recreate 100 % just like that. I know there are plugins that adds crackle and all that, but it's not quite the same. And it's also a totally different process to go to a record store to pick out the records, than to download stuff in a computer.
