You could EQ the bass out of the original sample, and/or use the technique that is known as the Low-End Theory.

I second what ede said about synths. All you really need is something with 3 voices. Drop in a sine wave, maybe add a dash of square on top if you want a little more mid/high range clarity and throw another sine in an octave lower as a sub....big meaty bass.
You can always beef a sampled baseline up with a sine bassline too.

If your mixer has effects or you can adjust bass-treble etc then do that. I find sounds filter and see how it sounds

language is a malleable mode of communication and "hip hop" can mean anything you want it to. It doesn't refer to just one thing, it doesn't not refer to the music. It's a relatively new word, and similar to every single word in the english language, it is subject to change and appropriation.

as far as a bass line goes. All I ever really for basslines is: sample one bass sound (any note), and then turn on 16 levels (tune), and what you have is 16 levels of the original bass sample. That serves my need for bass lines. Find a good bass sample and arrange the notes according to your tastes.

Niles Rodgers of Chic has some amazing basslines. A lot of the soul stomp 70s stuff has some amazing bass lines, but your best bet is to pick up some soul stomp collections, peep the bass lines, and then proceed to dig for artists whose basslines you know you like.
