Digging Question

If the price is right, do any of y'all ever pick up 'Greatest Hits' joints? I mean a lot of times, there's ill shit on those. They aren't like collector's items or anything like that. I love OGs as much as the next man, but it seems like they're worth it, especially for sampling.

G.hits are straight as long as the song u copped it 4 is as long as the original releases version...ex:-Barry White's GHITs...Im Gonna Love You... isn't as long as the original LP version. Sometimes greatest hits LP's have a different mix/cut of a song, sometimes the sound quality is different too-like if the orig was released in 1968 and the G. Hits was released in 1976, it might sound a lil different because of remastering, the compilation's mix engineer or whatnot. Also a greatest hits LP is a good way to check out a group's work b4 u go out a dig/search for their other albums

Yeah if u aint sure about a group and u diggin and find like 5 or 6 albums by them and 1 is a greatest hits...I'd cop the G.Hits 1st, b4 spending money on anything by them until i know what they sound like... OG pressings are cool, no doubt, but as long as the pressing availiable has the same tracks as the og, its all good... Like some WESTBOUND Records joints...I got Ohio Players Pleasure, and it was a 3rd pressing dist'd by 20th Century Records, then a month later i got Ohio Players "Pain" which was a Westbound/Janus pressing -i thought it was an og pressing, until a week later i copped Ohio Players CLIMAX( which is there 4th LP, Pain the 1st, and Pleasure the 2nd LP) the Climax joints cat# was WB-100?, the Pain was WB-2015, so hows the older albums cat # more recent than there 4th release? thats cuz the Pressing of Pain i got is a 2nd Westbound/Janus and the Climax is a first press..Only thing different is the Company that Mfg&Dist'd the album(Label), the Albums Sleeve, and the Label design, No major difference.

a lot of times my favorite songs are left off GREATEST HITS...but if i dont know an artist ill buy a greatest hits cuz u can see what there music is like and what theyre know for

I’m sure different people have different feelings on this matter. I personally would not buy greatest hits records simply for the fact that I’d only like the original LP that the track first came out on. Again I personally try not to focus on hits that artists have and rather find better songs that are less known.

man the price dont even have to be right, i pick up all those . i got hella G.H. ANTHOLOGYS WHAT NOT....i pick it up theres track on those that you will never find any where else so why would you not pick it up,

naaw man, collecting records is about collecting what you like,
you need to be your own style collect what sounds you want not what others say or tell you to pick up


and you need to check out what you have first before you start to give it away to your friend sounds like he may be getting over .

but if it's what your after then not so much of a loss.

research your records first is all.

seriously, if there's something on the record thats worth using then you've hit the jackpot, you want samples after all so format or OG or re-issue don't matter. I respect some guys want just the OG's and thats cool but for me i've never claimed to collect vinyl but I do collect the breaks

Believe me I am getting better as I get older. I am actually buying reissues now because I refuse to pay 170 for the original...sometimes . But I can’t help it. I have been an avid collector since the early 80’s and it’s mad hard to change my dogmatic/narrow view of what I want as a digger.

Alright, thanks for the advice y'all. Its really helpful. People tend to be all elitist w/ beatmaking/digging, and I'm glad to see folks showing love to newcomers. I just didn't know if it was something that was frowned upon or not within the beat digging community. I think I'm just overthinking shit and need to just do what sounds right instead of what people think the standard is. Peace y'all and much love.

you need to bring or have your own style thats what Hiphop is about bring your style and bringing something different, Be creative Be ORIGINAL ......dO YOU!!!

Just dig for the type of music you like. It's not about what records you have. You will find samples on whatever you buy. Sometimes I find that if I'm listening to music I like it's easier for me to hear a dope sample than if I was forcing myself to find something that I hate listening to. It's not that complicated. Just learn about what you like and find all the music you can.
