Is there any point to digging for Soul records anymore?

Just curious about this. I was at the record spot earlier today had a talk with the proprietor on this very subject. I've been a loyal customer for the past 6 years and someone i've considered a friend and mentor so believe me his opinion carries some weight. He asked me if people get tired of digging for the same types of records. Like he gets kids that come in and ask for Meter's records or spend hours digging through the soul and funk section and nothing else. I quote him, "hasn't that genre been picked bare by now?" I agreed with since i've learned that lesson years ago and pretty much stay in the rock, soundtrack, world instruments and classical sections. And besides, why spend money on something I can't even listen to all the way through irregardless of sampling? I said that most new guys now coming in just want that instant soul sound so they pick up anything out of the soul section and chop/loop it up. Plus, I have very few precious hours in my day to spend record shopping so I rather not do it listening to the same shit everyone else sampled over and over again. So I stay out of the soul/funk area entirely.

I'd have to agree with you on that one my man. I take the same approach when digging these days too. I generally stick to the prog-rock/classical/world music/soundtracks sections to try to find something different.

i love funk and soul music so i still dig for it. plus are u gana sample the same song as someone else let alone flip it the same way?

theres so many genres of music out there and theres so much music ,

what i see is that these nubies are looking for stuff that there idols use , to recreate or to practice the style,

i still dig for F/S but i pick everything i have so much different music in my collection they just need to figure out what there after,they'll evetually get out of that phase,

i collect all records, not just a certain genre

Y the hell would you stop digging for soul and funk records?? You guys are crazy sometimes I swear. You dont have to use just a loop, You know you can always just sample instrument hits and sounds. How bought all those dope ass open drum hits that are on soul records? Forgot about those huh? I dig for everything! I prefer imports and such but if just looking for some drums you cant go wrong wit soul and funk.

Yeah, I collect records. Not genres. I'm going to cop whatever I feel are the best records in the store. True, some stores may have been raided for soul records, but if not, why wouldn't you dig through them? It's not my favorite genre, not my strongest genre in my crates, but with all of the dope beats that have been made using soul samples and all of the dope unused samples that are just waiting to be found, why would you abandon a genre?

if you're whole purpose for diggin is to find samples...fine

I personally love old R&B and funk records
jazz too, but not as much

I buy records i enjoy, its not just about sampling

Because its about as cliche as snap beats. If I even see more than one black guy on the cover and their sporting afros-REJECTED.

No, I just don't waste money and time trying to be a follower buying records to impress other people. But if paying $$$ for a "rare" record by a third rate soul outfit because ____ sampled it to death or used it in a mix gets you off, go ahead.
