same thing happened to me recently - the only positive thing i can say is that i didn't have enough time to really do too much on it, so the lost data doesn't kill me. well, now that i am trying to spend more quality time making noise, i decided to get that thing up and running again. in the process, i decided to up the ram, and the only low density 256 mb chip the retailer had was 133 mhz, so i went for it. didn't work. :( i do not know if the chip is bad, but i was able to dig up a 100 mhz chip, as well as 2 17 gb 10k drives to drop into external enclosures. i picked up a maxtor 120 gb ide drive to replace the failed 60 gb drive, and that did not work at all. i have been looking for a drive compatibility list, but no luck so far. after watching the mad toe-tapping lady tell me to "please wait" for a day when trying to format the maxtor drive, i finally gave up in frustration and went for the scsi drives. those formatted fine, so there is something. while doing the format, i took a closer look at the ide cable and noticed that the edge that runs up against the cd/rw carrier was frayed and possibly grounding out. i disconnected all the ide drives and removed the maxtor and dug up a new ide cable. this one seems to work, i guess - i have only successfully tested it using the cd/rw drive. so hey, no big deal - i will just use the scsi drives i scavenged from the machine that also had the usable memory. popped the memory in and hooked up the drives, things seemed to be working fine. so i go out and pick up some mix400 rolling stands and start putting things back together. i turn on the mpc, start loading the cd that came with the unit, decided to patch it in to the console and then discovered that thing has gone mute on me - no audio at all! no metronome, no nothing! nothing from the the headphone output, nothing from the main outs (xlr and 1/4"). removed the stick of ram i popped in, no change. disconnected the ide cable (only the cd/rw drive is connected), no change. sampling seems to be working. i am hoping hoping hoping i did not blow my dac (or something else in the output stage, pre headphone and mains). i completely broke down after futzing around with the thing for uhhhhh 11 hours now and sent a message off to akai.
