Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000

This is a question about velocity settings.

I have a yamaha explorer electric drum kit midi'ed to play samples from the 4000. This is pretty cool, but i can't figure out how get velocity sensitivity to work. Regardless of how light or hard i hit a drum it plays full velocity on the mpc. Both the mpc and the drum kit seem to be recognizing the velocity as both meters read the velocity of the drum hit correctly when the drum is played. I have the full velocity button on the mp is off. Anyone ever had a setup like this? Seems it would be the same for setting up a velocity sensitive keyboard?

To me it sounds like the DTX is sending full velocity so you should look into that. You already know that the MPC just does what it is told, so I wouldn't think it would be anything to do with the MPC at all.... unless you check the Modulations and make sure that velocity is routed to amplitude.

in the mpc midi monitor page if i hit a pad on the dtx i get a note and a velocity number that changes with the velocity i hit the pad. but it still sounds like it is hitting every time with full velocity.

looking into the manual for the modulations page now.

@aww_naww, id appreciate that.

Ok, I think i may have something for you.
First select a "DRUM" program of your choice
Go to the "PROGRAM PAGE"
Hit "KG MIX" then hit "ZONE"
Cursor over to where it say "ONE" and change it to "ALL" (<-- that step may not be necessary but just roll with it for good measure)
Now cursor over to one of the "ZONES" onto the "LEVEL" field and hit "WINDOW" (the orange button)
This should bring you to the "PROGRAM MODULATION" page
Cursor to an empty "SOURCE" field and select "TILT VELO"
Right next to the "SOURCE" field you should see the "DESTINATION" field
In that field select "AMPLITUDE" and in the "DEPTH" field enter a value of +34.

(NOTE: if there is a TILT VELO and AMPLITUDE already selected DO NOT add another row of the same. just change the DEPTH value to +34)

Close the PROGRAM MODULATION window dont forget to change the ALL value back to ONE on the ZONE page.

Lets see if this works for you before we try something else.
GOOD LUCK
