The lil f*cker froze up on me last night As I was saving the beat~I know All Machines theoretically freeze up, but I thought the 4K was considered of the most realiable and didn't have this issue. As I was about to save I pressed the mixer mode [key], then Hit the save [key] only to find out it was froze...the odd thing about it was that in the mixer mode I could hit a pad and the 4k would still highlight the corresponding pad (In [F2]) I even hit undo which worked and possibly played part of the song back(don't remember)..I running O.S. 1.71 Is This A Glitch or Freeze, have any of you experienced it and what can I do to avoid it besides saving regularly?

I had mine freeze only one time since I got it back in 2003. So, yes, the 4K is very stable in that regards. Luckily for me, I was just messing around with somethings, so I lost nothing important.

If, it happens to you again before you can save, try to access the MPC via ak.Sys. It might be possible to save that way.

I was having a ton of problems with mine just like what you are describing. Id start on the main screen, hit save and it would go to the save screen and freeze immediately. I could still play the pads and hear the samples as they triggered as if I was on the main screen, but couldnt do anything else.

Since the hard drive was making all sorts of weird noises (I got it used a month ago, still had the original IBM Deskstar in it), I switched it out the hd with a seagate, and I havent had a single problem with it freezing since. If your HD is making noise, try switching it out and see if that fixes the problem. It will only run you $40 or so.

Akai went bust for the 2nd time around just after the release of the 4000, as a result the OS could be a little buggy, and there was no further support for it, hopefully AKAI or someone might re-visit this and develop futher OS! still a beast of a machine
