Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000

I got a couple of issues with my 4k:

1. All samples clips/distorts if i dont mix down the volume on the parts in the mpc-mixer
2. Samples clips/distorts when im in program-mode
3. Some samples clicks and pops (same samples that doesnt click and pop in the 2000XL)
4. The sync can´t be trusted.

and the worst one:

5. Just recently the MPC just froze and made an awful noise that didnt go away, almost blew my speakers. When pressing 'stop' nothing happened. I had to shut the power down.

I dont trust this machine no more. Could this be OS related? (1.71) Should a format MPC HD / re-install OS fix this kind of problems? or is my MPC broken?

As far as the clipping is concerned, where's your main output level set at? If it's set at zero, I'd back it off a bit to something like -6 or whatever. You should find this setting under "global".

dabmeister: That´s a good tip.

Is there any more global settings i should F with? Anything more i can do to prevent my mp from crashing? I wanna fix this mpc... I just noticed that there is a 'defrag' operation option... Let´s do a little of that

Whats the most optimal option to use in "Digital out sync": Digital in, Wordclock, or Internal?

Don´t really know what this is, but im syncin via MIDI to external soundcard --> Logic

And "Item sort"... Chronic or NAME?

The best answers to your questions lie within the users guide. Did you get a manual with your 4k?

If not, you can find it on akaipro.com.

Remove the 2 sticks of RAM. Next, load up a few sounds and see if the problem is still there. You could have bad RAM or it is incompatible.

I opened the case up, and pressed at all cables and ramsticks...nothing sat loose, BUT, when startin the MPC again my problem with distortion in program mode was gone!

The sync in clockmode still f´d up, but goes pefect with MTC mode.

Guess u have open your case up from time to time and press on sh!t ;)

Ive had a fatal error crash a couple of times, but i guess that was a 'program' -related issue, where having all sorts of samplerates and bits from 41000, 32000, 24-bit, 16-bit, 32-bit in the same program. After converting all my samples in the same program to the same samplerate/bit (44100/16-bit) everything works fine!

Let´s see how long this MP can stay alive now...
