Time Signatures on the 4K

I did do it...I guess Im so used to 4/4 Signature that when I put the last bar in 8/4 it was longer and I kept playing short not being used to the extension. But if I extend the time signature isnt that the same as adding more bars like making the sequence 12 bars? or does it still maintain the length of 8 bars? Thats what Im trying to figure out...Im trying to utilize different time signatures in my compositions like say for R&B beats...
