making expressive drums

How do you guys set up your programs interms of modulation layers etc so that your drums have expression. any tips on this are welcome

Not quite sure what you mean.. 'expression' ?

it really all depends on what you are trying to do,

MPC is ideal for experimetal, do whatever, even do randome stuff, but it won't teach you anything

but here's where u come in

if you don't know what you wanna do, just use: think- this is not a feature in the mpc though :) ,

say on a accoustik kit the decay on a hihat isn't always the same so modulate the amp decay with some randome lfo or whetever

a snare might not allways have the same attack so mod the start point or amp attcak or both, why not do a little decay sawell and why not add...

but these should be very gentel mods, you don't really wanna hear it! just feel it!, unless you want fxample a very realistik handclap, one that actually sounds a little dif eah time

and prehaps on toms u wanna mod the filter to give it a dif tone each time and u like it a bit audible as it it give the track a charegter ..

just go with whatever flows with your track,

practise make perfect.

Maybe we should make a sticky thread on how to make rhythm tracks. It seems we get this thread twice a week.

I know that experimenting is the key, but just thought some of you guys might have some useful tips that could be a little time saver.
Been using emu samplers for years and can really get my shit set up pretty quickly in the modulation matrix. What I essentially wanted to know is what velocity level you use to modulate amplitude, tips like glide said that you modulate the sample start point with a lfo.... that shit rocks..

Can you randomize these modulations? So that every kick sounds different but in no particulat order. Just wack random. But just a little modulation tho. Indeed for hats is this perfect.
How to set this up? Manual page...?
