Well what can I say? It's a very impressive machine! The sampler quality is great, even at 44k it sounds very nice. The blue paint is not bad at all, it has a kind of classy look that I couldn't see on all the pics on the web. The pads have a very nice rubbery feel, while I expected them to be rather stiff. Hitting the pads feels great, because the 4k feels very solid while whacking them. The fan is very quiet, what a relief, but I don't have the HD installed yet. Love the fact that I can get in and out of record mode whithout stopping the machine. Love the MIDI monitor, already used it a couple of times to see what goes in or what goes out. The filters sound very nice for digital ones. The effects are certainly not as bad as I'd expected. Some are even good I think, but it's still early. Really exciting to have both a great sequencer and top notch sampler combined into one device! I'm having a blast here!

Congrats Rob, I know that with your spending a year or so with the manaul like I did
before purcahase, and as you had, will really help you hit the ground RUNNING not

I agree, the the FX can be useable. I think they would even be better with a FX User
library where we can save Preset's for ourselves. That way if you spend the time
getting a good FX , then you can use it other programs without as much work. I know
that the MV-8000 has this, and I think it would help with the MPC 4000 as well. I guess
that 2 RFE's that I'll be sending today.

Having only the 2 outputs, has made me delve more into the FX, as I can't send
everything seperate yet, so use what I can !

finally that yellow silkscreen for the Q control section is legible on blue paint.....Yellow silkscreen on white paint....what were they thinking?

I've always liked the white 4k, thought they had a lot of class. But the yellow on white paint was not the best of combinations, I agree. The blue scheme works quite nice and I like the large contrast between the paint and the knobs. They really stand out, even in a dark room.

I installed my drives a couple of hours ago, and the RAM. This blue one came with the digital IB-4D SPDIF card standard installed, so I was able to wire up the digital output of the cdwriter drive. Installation worked fine and the drives were recognized right away.

I was able to load my first kit from the Akai cdrom that came with it and whack those pads, yeah! This is my first mpc, but damn, this is MUCH better than an X0X interface, like I suspected. Total freedom, you feel like a real musician when playing your drums. Perfect!

I still have to install the analog 8 output card today, and a second memory stick, later on. Have yet to try that little USB keyboard I got for it.

As for XoX interface, yes, it has been very much fun, actually PLAYING my drums
rather then just programming them as you do on the XOX interface (though I'm not
giving up my 808!). And if you need the X0X for any reason, you can alwasy buy a Korg ER-1 or Korg ES-1 (for $100) and use that to program the X0X style on the MPC, so you can get the best of both worlds.

I've got that Logitech black USB ASCII keyboard they sell for the PlayStation. I understand it works, but haven't tried it yet.

Used to own one back in the days that an 808 was just 'a' drum machine. I remember I was frustrated about it back then because it didn't do 'real' drum sounds. Loved its punch though, and after some time I got very nice snare sounds out of it. Had it hooked up with a Juno60 through that DCB port. Tight!

Not sure if I need an X0X interface, but how would you use that ER-1 to program the MPC then? I can understand that the MPC can be triggered by MIDI notes coming from the ER-1. But programming?

Just tested it. That keyboard seems to work fine. I was able to enter a sequence name and jump to pages using keyboard shortcuts.
