Hey guys I was just curious as to what you guys set your swing to when recording a beat? I love making 90's boom bap but tend to notice when quantizing the beats just sound robotic if you would say and just plain. I know adjust swing can give it that more real feel. Any input on this would be awesome :-D

stop quantizing and play (like a pro) - it will render your performance and you will start (learning) to play better

on a side note - is each track quantized differently or is the swing setting global / sequence?
-can i quantize some tracks with 60% swing and others (within the same sequence) 75% ?-

No one way to do things. Sometimes it isn't so much the swing just using hi-hats in thirds instead of in quarters against the kick and snare in quarter time.
Other than that I get close to 60 but do not tend to go past that.
I like the note above about playing it without quantize. I live by this. I even got an electronic kit so that I can play in the midi notes with a real drummer and still be able to move things if necessary.
Peace

Thanks for the input and yes to not using quantize. If my kick patterns tend to sound to snapped to the grid I usually turn quantizing off. :-D

I started out trying to sound like so and so. It taught me much on how it sounds and what it does. There are recipes, find your own and don't tell anybody.

First of all, I LOVE quantizing. Don't be fooled by everyone that says quantizing is bad and sounds robotic and all. You just have to decide on WHAT you want to quantize (Hats, kicks, snares, etc.). Making your drums sound nice is all about layering sounds, adjusting the velocities, and some tweaking in step edit mode.

However, if you do decide to quantize all components of your drums, your bass and everything else that you put in there should have swing and a natural feel.

Think about this, the majority of the 90's boom bap stuff is quantized. But, it's still funky right?
