How Do You...

Filter a sample so that you cut off all the highs and mids and bring out the lows so that you can make a bassline out of a melody? I'm having trouble doing this on the 4000. Somebody wanna help me out on this plaese? Thanks...

Are you talking about "eliminating" musical aspects of a sample so only the Bass line comes through? Filtering will only filter out so much. You'll always have frequencys in there...you can't easily "pull out" an instrument from a sample containing othere sounds...you can kind of do it ..but this ain't no music minus one.

How long is the sample you're talking about?

Have you tried recording the sample hard left or right to see if you can capture more of the bass from a mono angle?

The 4k features 6 pole filters...just start experimenting with each filter and tweak away.
This is hardly a question that one could give a step by step tutorial on.

an 8-bar 60's guitar loop a la"007". There's an underlying bassline, so I want to filter out the guitar highs and have a bassed up bass line of the original sample to layer over the original and also use as a bassline....That give you a better idea?

Listen...you've got a piece of 60's vinyl, sample in Mono..hard left and hard right to hear where the Bass is most present. Keep the sample you like best. Assign it to a pad. Hit program key and hit the pad you asssigned the sample to. There you can edit the filters to your hearts content...

There's a method I use on my mpc2000 that might work for you... I don't own a 4000 as of yet... Sample the sound you want to use, but sample it with your bass turned up (if you're sampling from a mixer, turn the bass on the eq up) but not to the point where it distorts. You can turn down your highs a bit too if you like, do what sounds good to your ear, and sample it. You can then apply a lowpass filter, filter it way down... I don't know how your filter on your 4000 is but on my 2000 I use a setting below 20... and then turn up my resonant filter to like 3 or 5... usually that is how I do it.

big eff, i like to do the same thing, i dont have an mpc yet, but in cool edit i use the parametric eq, and just cut everything but the bass, and i jack it up a bit, it layers nice, even if there still are traces of sounds in the background...works good
