MPC-4000 bug list

OK, I will open up a thread here where I will post all bugs that I can confirm and therefore will enter into Akai's MPC 4000 bugbase.
To keep this thread clean and searchable for everybody, *please* do not post anything here. Just let it grow.
Purpose is that people can compare if they think they have new bugs to report.
To report new bugs, do that into the "important: 4k bugfix update" thread or send me a direct email with the description of the bug (as short and clear as possible) plus used OS version. [email protected].

I will enter feature requests as well, as long as they have a direct link with the reported bug. You might post other feature requests as well. I will discuss those with Akai, but I won't put them into this list.

If you encounter any mistakes in my descriptions of the bugs, please report at [email protected].

When no OS version is mentioned with a bug, it is OS V1.71. Otherwise the different OS version is stated.

If there is a B before the number, it is a bug, if there is an F before the number it is a feature request.

Program mode, MISC page, BEND block:
setting aftertouch TYPE field to "POLY" (rather than "CHANNEL") and then save the Program, this particular setting is not saved.

Save a Program with this setting to HD and reload it and the setting has reverted back to "CHANNEL"

MAIN mode, create a sequence with a lot of bars, say 40
In the NOW field locate to "40.01.000"
Change the number of bars to 1 in the bar field (NOW field still indicates "40.01.000")
Go to the time signature field and press WINDOW
As you can see there is no cursor (it is still in the 40st bar)

When you move the jogwheel lefwards, the cursor moves from the right into the window. If you press WINDOW twice you can see the cursor is gone again, back to 40.

MAIN MODE, create a sequence with 999 bars 4/4, tempo 30.
In the NOW field locate to position 537.04.464 (time will show 1:11:34:24)
Increase the location with one click to 537.04.465
The time will reset to 00:00:00:00 in stead of increasing to 01:11:35:00. This time is *also* send out off the MIDI port when MMC send is assigned to that port in the sync window.

Set the MPC to 96khz in GLOBAL mode, system clock.
After reboot go to MULTI mode
Create a multi, select the multi and press WINDOW
Press COPY (F6). Press DO IT (F5)

The following fatal error occurs:

Go to Q-link Setup
Set Q1 to send out a CC number (I used CC1) (you do that in the SEND window (F2)
Go to FX mode and choose any delay effect there (I choose DELAY STEREO)
Move Q1. You'll hear Kraftwerk's "Computerwelt" (digital noise) but not for long. After some movements the MPC hangs and rebooting is the only solution.

Choosing FX slot 3 with any delay type and LINK FX3 to FX4 set to ON gives the same result.

Start up a clean MPC
Go to Q-link SETUP.
On top it reads "Multi 1"
Now set one Q-link while in RECEIVE window (F1) to some sort of event
Set the same Q-link in SEND window (F2) to some sort of even
Go to MULTI mode
Select Multi 1 and press WINDOW
Press COPY (F6) and DO IT (F5)
Select the new Multi 2
Press Q-link SETUP again.
The RECEIVE settings are copied, but the SEND settings are not.

This one is not reproducable with defined steps, but easily achievable. Just browse a lot through your folders and files in LOAD mode. Jump back and forth in folders.
Sooner or later you will get blanc screens in the right column of the load screen. So maps and files that should be there are not visable anymore.
Also, browsing in that right column of the load screen with the jogwheel makes the files disappear from the screen you're going through.

If you go back to the root folder the problem is gone again, but it is quite annoying and happening all the time in my extensive sounds folder.

This bug seems to be only in 1.71, not in 1.70 or before.

Load a drumkit
Go to MAIN mode and record on the first 5 tracks your separate drums, for instance, bassdrum on track 1, snare on 2, closed hihat on 3, open hihat on 4 and crash on 5.
Set the cursor on 'Track 5" and press WINDOW, then press "SEPARATE" (F3).
This function seperates any multichannel midi. For the sake of this bug it doesn't matter that there is none on track 5.

Select tracks 7-21 as the destinations for the 16 separated channels. Then press "DO IT".
Press PLAY in MAIN mode and notice the the first four tracks are empty!

PROGRAM mode, EDIT 2, LFO1 and LFO2 blocks:

The "delay" parameter, acts as "fade in", i.e. when increasing the value the modulation fades in from 0 to maximum.
Actually I think this effect is more desirable than an abrupt start of the LFO modulation which the word "delay" suggests, so this is a small UI interface bug. "Delay" should change to "Fade in".

PROGRAM mode, EDIT 2, LFO1 and LFO2 blocks:

When MIDI sync is set to OFF, parameter "Beat" should be greyed out

When MIDI sync is set to ON, parameter "Rate" should be greyed out.

The MPC causes great trouble with setting levels, because when one level setting makes it reach the maximum level, another level parameters won't work right anymore.

Example:
Assign a sample to a pad and turn on "16 levels" with parameter "velocity".
Got to MIXER mode and play PAD 16 (maximum level).
Changing the level slider 1/3 makes no difference
If you change that level slider 1/3 by playing PAD 12 for instance, there is a clear difference.
In other words, in this case the part mixer can only add something when note velocity is not at a maximum.

Since there are several level settings all over the 4k (sample amplitude, zone level, keygroup level, program level, part level etc.), things get very complicated.

As it is now on the MPC, one can change the microtuning (PROGRAM mode, MISC (F3), SCALE block) of the MPC4000 and there are also some preset tuning scales available.

The MPC let you change scaling by so called et-cents (equal tuning cents) each step being 1/1200 of an octave.
To faithfully recreate other scales, the resolution should become higher.
The standard midi tuning specs provide a resolution of a maximum of 0.0061 cents.
