I have always written with some kind of drum machine and instruments, something like logic encourages layering, where i find a piano encourages melody.

I find Logic great for MIXING though.

Seriously I can't see using Logic as a big tape deck, that's more along the PT line.
PT will out mix Logic but Logic shines for those who want to create in the box.

I would still think your best results would come from getting the ADAT card and going into Logic 8 tracks at a time. but if you really want to not spend the money I would start digging into what's causing your timing problems.
Generally it comes from a combination of your DAW setting, MPC settings and MIDI interface.
I still don't do multiple passes unless I am using a buffer of 64, higher settings of 128 etc yield inconsistent results.
