Heybb..

anyone have experience with analogue solutions TR808 midi kit ?

trying to trigger it via 4000 results in sounds falling out both via pads and via playback..
(same on spectralis and an asrx sequencers)

when I trigger it from a keyboard controller through the MPC it results the same way

*when I trigger it from a keyboard controller straight to midi in on 808 its Ok!!?

just got my 808 midi´d up trying to make this work..

any thoughts...

go to roland's website and download the manual for the TR 808. check what they say about using an external sequencer or controller.

how long have you owned the 808 for?

Thx4the reply but I dont think its likely that roland has any info on this !, had it since '02...it works Ok from a Mpc2000xl! And its flawless triggerd by an old yamaha Rx11... Doesnt work on 4k nor a 2500!? Whats the deal? Did standard midi get an update in '98... Anyone have/know detailed info on what type of midi data is sent by the morden seq that the vintage kitt does clearly not like ?

well then we know the problem is not on the 808's end.

Maybe there is a configuration in the 4000 that you must do to get it to work, like "turn on such and such port"

in which case the 4000's manual might come in handy.

808's are expensive, I could have had one for 800 bucks a few months ago but couldn't come up with the money

If you hit the "MIDI" button, the display will show the destination configuration. Highlight the "Drum pad" section and toggle, you'll see three options:

1. sequencer

2. sampler-a

3. midi out-a

Of course you know that option 3 seems to be more of what you're trying to do. You'll see it routed from the pad to the midi port a in the graphics on the display.

you know, I am not sure the technicals so much behind this slight possibilities...

but, try getting a midiman merge 2x2

just google "merge 2x2" and look at the image search results... you will see a little pink box.

now these things work off the midi's standard power that comes out, but in the owners manual for the box it talks about older midi devices. it says that sometimes you need to plug the adapter plug into the wall because some older midi devices require more power to function.

in fact here is the manual http://media.musicalplanet.com/pdf/THK018.PDF

I have my Roland TR808 midi-ed by Analogue Solutions.

It works fine.

The various sounds on the 808 trigger from the MIDI notes from (is it the D above middle C? I forget).
If you send a note with velocity above 80, it triggers the "accent".

The 808 will respond on the MIDI channel it first receives after you've held the switch to the "LEARN" position.

Couldn't be simpler, really.

so let me get this right...
your triggering your 808 via the 4k without any problems ...?

....its not going through some old 80´s crap first, or a midi box of some sorts.. just direct 4k to 808...

if that´s the actually the case,...my problem is all about bad wiring...

Yep, check those midi cables. Also, it's a good thing to keep an extra one or two laying around just for this purpose.

well in my case ...its a matter of killing my electrician ... if its a case of bad internal wiring .... the kit has to be installed via solder & wire.. already tested a few midi cables...
so lets say its handy to have an axe or a 9mm around just in case your electrician is standing next to you after he´s moded your 808...

I just find it odd that it would work on a 2000Xl and a RX11, if the wiring is bad...

I have all the sounds and accent working... and I can trigger them no probs via keyboard too...

Yes, directly, via the TR808's MIDI input.
I sent mine to Analogue Solutions and had it modified by them,
I didn't do it myself from one of their kits.

Luckily I picked mine up for a whopping $500 in 94.... which is the price that I personally think they should go for used...

But i've definitely gotten my $500 worth out of it in the last 14 years :)

Try and set the 808 Sync switch to "Input".
The TR-808 doesn't (per se) have a MIDI port. It's a "DIN-Sync" port... sort of like MIDI but uses a different pin out. Remember, the 808 was out way before MIDI came into play.
Like Feline1 said he got his Sync port modified. try gogle for a MIDI-Cv converter.
