Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000
By Kuntry Boy Mon Nov 24, 2008 1:40 am
Hey Guys,
Maybe Im doing something wrong, has anyone noticed that when assigning the pitch to the knobs or sliders that the pitch doesn't go up very high or low in scale. I have even changed the settings from the highest possible number to the lowest negative number. Its almost as if it does +3 and -3. When I had the mpc 2000xl it would easily do the range of +5 and -5 if that makes sense to anyone. The drums would pitch very high to very very low on the automatic setting. The 4k is just not giving me the range of pitch shift I know that the 2kxl did. Any suggestions?

I tend to use the pad mixer page in qlink setup send page. Also like in Ableton live if you go to seq edit you can use the graphic edit to setup pitch point over a measures. It is up to you.

Yea Haze, thats the way Im doing it now through the send option on q link but it gives me like +8500 to -8500 and its not quite high or low enough, but I will try to other way with graphic edit, THX. I may have to edit in soundforge then copy it over in aksys.

This is exactly how I do most of my editing, I can't see it happening any better than this.

This is one of the blessed resources you can have at your disposal.

you edit on soundforge and transfer back using aksys?

is it just as easy as dragging and dropping into aksys?

Easier. Since there is no Sample Editing in Ak.Sys, you set up a preference as to what
your Sample Editor is. Then when you are in Ak.Sys looking at your samples, if you
already have this set, and you double click on the sample, it will open it in what ever
Sample Editor you selected. Do your magic, and then hit "Save" in your Sample Editor
and it will transfer it back to the MPC automatically...

It's fairly seemless...

Hmm, interesting tips, but everyone is avoiding the original question. Would you really edit a sample just to change the pitch? Way too much work for a simple built in modulation! You can always use regular q-link modulation (non pad-control) which is more flexible, but then you are tied to the multi and have used up one of your q-links for good.

Pad control is relative to the program assigned. Pitch in this mode is actually just simulating pitch bend, so if you plug in a midi keyboard, pitch bend will have the same effect, but for the entire program.

That leads us to the correct answer. Go to Program List, click Misc, and there you have the pitch bend range. For some reason, it is set to 2/-2 by default. 12 or 24 (1 and 2 octaves) are more typical settings, but feel free to set it to whatever you need. Not easy to figure out coming from other MPCs, but that should do it!

Good tips McSmooth but I thought Pad control affect the individual note or keygroup number in a drum program not the whole program like in a keygroup bass patch. I do agree that I forgot to adjust the bend amount that you expertly pointed out good looking. It is always the man over the machine. 8)

Yup, individual notes... just like the 2k did. Typically you WANT to pitch drums separately and not have it effect all other sounds in the kit. Pad control is more for drum programs than keygroups (not even sure if it works the same there). In either case, a normal pitch bend message should pitch the entire program.
