First time midi'er

Ok so I copped arturia analog factory, i'm trying to have it setup so I can play the midi notes from my keyboard controller to my 4000.

I bought a midi cord today and connected the cord from the midi controllers 'midi out' to the 4000's 'midi in'

The 'In' box was flashing (in the track block section) and the 4000 was picking up the levels from the sounds being played on the controller. However, when I try to record these sounds and play them back on the 4000 the levels on the 'Out' side are reacting but there is no sound being played..

What am I doing wrong?

Question, how do you actually have your devices connected?

I have a splitter cable connected to an amplifier, two cords for left and right connected to the back of the mpc - connected to the splitter cable, and the computer speakers cable connected to the splitter cable, sound confusing?

The midi controller is connected to the computer via usb.

I'm trying to make it so I can play the sounds from arturia analog factory on my 4000..

It looks like you need to set things up so that the MPC acts as a controller too. This way you can control the softsynth just like you would from your keyboard controller.

You might want to route the keyboard controller through the MPC first (if that's possible), then to the DAW if you're lacking the appropriate midi I/O.

The Midi out jack on the keyboard controller has a midi cord connecting to the mpc 4000's midi in jack.

The 4000 is picking up the soft synth's midi messages via keyboard controller. However the 4000 isnt playing the sounds back. I've tinkered with the 4000's settings - I've set 'Type:' to 'Inst' - went to the misc page - set Mode to Midi clock, and tested all other settings.. and still no sound is being played..

The computer is picking up, and playing, the soft synths sounds via the keyboard controller because the usb out on the keyboard controller has a usb cord connected to the back of the computers usb in jack... all of this is fine..

My keyboard controller only has one midi jack - and this is the 'midi out' jack.. is there some kind of equipment I need to get to hook up a midi cord to its midi in from the 4000's midi out to relay the sound that is going into the 4000 from the 4000's midi in via the keyboard controllers midi out?

Chances are, one of your issues could be that the same midi channel isn't being shared amongst the devices. Of course you're going to see midi activity if the controller is directly connected to the MPC.

But it's the "midi through" routing to the DAW (via the MPC) that you'd probably want to put focus on. Have you hit the midi button on the MPC to see how things are routed?

I've checked that out, the Midi in-I (the port the midi cable is connected too) by default is set to sequencer - the only other option is 'Sampler A'

And then there is the 'Drum Pad' part - by default this is set to 'Sequencer' - the options here are 'Sampler A' and 'Midi OUT-A', Which nothing is connected to any of the outs

If you noticed, I've highlighted the area that's more likely the reason you can't hear anything. If the controller is midi'd to the MPC, then the MPC has to be connected to the DAW in order to trigger and hear the softsynth.

You'll need a multi I/O midi hub (connected from the computer/DAW, usually via usb) that the midi out of the MPC needs to connect to.

I've been thinking about buying this sound card for my computer, mainly for the midi ports.

Yes, you could go with that. As long as the computer has a way of seeing incoming midi activity. I guess something is better than nothing. But here's a little food for thought...Just because your controller is connected via usb, doesn't mean that it's handling the midi in chores.

Yes, in order to trigger the softsynth, there has to be a "midi in" on the DAW/computer. Like with what I use, my midi interface has 8 ins and 8 outs, and that's not counting the two sound cards that have the basic midi in, out & thru's on them (which I don't use).

Sounds like Dab says you need a few extra steps. One connect midi cable from 4k out A or your choice as you have 4 midi outs in the back to the USB midi interfaces midi in. This way you can send midi to your DAW. Now you go back to the mpc and go to track on the main page change the track to a midi track look up in the manual on how to do it. It is easy what it does is whatever you record on the mpc sequencer track will be send out one of the mpcs midi outs to the sound module connected. This is basic midi controller. Remember now keyboard controller to play the notes>mpc to record sequencer tracks>artiura to play back the sounds. You are not using the internal sounds of the 4k so you don't have mess with the midi page.
