you can make a decent beat with it in a few days,,, but making complete compositions is very hard,,, for that i suggest to use a softsequencer with it to.

not first hand knowledge but from what ive read in previous posts if you like the 2k sequencer you'll love the 4ks, just a little getting used to...
visual piano/drum roll editing on the SEQ EDIT page, now thats tidy!

never used a 2k, they got no grid editing yeah? only step and realtime.

No offense Mohammed, but I remember some of your earlier questions, and it seemed as if you didnt even have a basic knowledge of a MPC. If you use a sequencer with the 4000 then you are bypassing some of it's main strengths. If you are familiar with the 2000 then then you are a few steps ahead of novices. The sequencers ar similiar, but the main difference is understanding multis. Once you grasp that then you are on your way. Be leary of some of the suggestions on this board, because I believe some of these guys dont even have a 4000. Some their questions are borderline childish  .

"for that i suggest to use a softsequencer with it to."

I would not spend that kinda cash just to buy something else to make it work better...

ohh I know.. :) not only this site, but the internet in general.

"if you like the 2k sequencer you'll love the 4ks, just a little getting used to.."

yea, but that's the thing.. when I wanna knock out a track, I wanna do it right away. I love my XL, but I'd like to (1) have a HD to store my personal samples. Right now, I use an s-1000HD, but I wouldn't need it if I had the 4K.. (2)I run some samples through filtering units that I wouldn't need if I had the 4K. (3) to stretch my samples, I usually do em all at the same time and the XL by itself is slow. (4) no usb support.. (5) faster processor in the 4k speeds re-sampling...there's a lot more reasons, but I can get by with the XL. My biggest gripe is that my MPC has a broken data wheel, it won't play note offs in song chain mode, and some of the buttons work when they want to.. I work the ish out my XL, and to fix all these problems would hit me for the cost of a new one. I can sell it for $600 and use that towards the 4k.. nahmean..

Ayo roxstar, I have some of the same concerns or rather questions that you have about the 4k....

It's not that hard to learn from where your at. Most of the menus are

close to previous mpc's. Transfering songs from the 60,3000,2000 was a

lil tricky at first.

Some tips

1. There not just samples and programs anymore. They have multis and

parts, so you have to assign your previous programs to a multi.

2. Sequences made with 16 level tuning won't play without activating

them. This is strange to me but you have to go in step edit and scroll

through every step.

3. I didn't have the efx in the 2000 but sequences made with 3000 efx

have to be redone.

Knowing the 2000XL didnt really help me with The 4K I was so pissed for a week. Read up on Programs, Multis and Keygroups. That will help out.

the mpcs in general work the same way, you just have to understand the upgraded features and new stuff

ICEBERG, can you step record using the "REc button" and note advance keys?

like on the mpc2000xl? i.e. right from the main screen-holding down rec, and advancing using the step-arrow keys-hitting the pads in the spots you want?

thats the crucial one for me..........

I was thinking of investing in an akai s950, but maybe going for the 4000 would be a better idea?

yeah, i know they are completely differant monsters, i was just deciding where i wanted to put my money! And thinking out load, wasnt tryin to make a point (sorry if it made no sense)

if that makes sense, ive got to sell my mpc to get the 4000, and im not sure if im gonna do that, but with a few hundred, i could get a s950. Its not so much of the money its about what i wanna use! Im completely foriegn to both.....as i never really tried to figure out the mpc4 at the store, and never played with a 950. SO im going off alot of what other users have to say! I know my equipment very well, And i know i have to make an informed desicision, because whatever i get i need to stick with.

But like you said, they are complete differant machines-technology function vs sound.....all the pain i have with my mpc2000xl, will come along with the 950 i.e. zip disk and floppy drive, vs hard drive and cd/all internal.
