MPC 4000 and Reason....

for some reason (ha, no pun intended) I've tried to hook up the MPC 4k to trigger sounds in reason and I cant do it. When I had it all hooked up to the MPC 2Kxl, it worked like a charm. All I had to do was load my preset program and sequence & I was all set.

I'm thinking the hook up should generally be the same as outlined in the MPC to logic tutorial but alas...no dice.

FYI, I'm running an MPC 4k fully blown (fx, adat, 8 out, 100g hd, 512 ram), MacBook 2.6 4g ram 250 7200hd internal, Glyph 500Q hd external, M-Audio FW410, M-Audio Oxygen 8v2, Record+Reason 4


...and while u guys and girls are at it, how do I save sounds within a folder without them bing just willy-nilly in the heard drive. I'm a manual guy and it's just too general.

I guess with much power comes much responsibility; and this machine is capable of waaaaay more than my other baby so I just need to be in the know. Thanks!!!!

What does your pad routing look like under your "midi" options?

Yeah, that's the thing too...in 'midi' the pads triggered in order on the redrum and there was one pad that I had to correct the key on but as soon as I switched to 'main' they triggered not in order. Then, the pads started to mute other midi channels I'm assumming because redrum's orange indicators on mute kept flashing...then the pads stopped triggering altogether.

I checked the program, part, multi, keygroups; I even reloaded the program and the seq files....nada.

Totally baffled cuz I went from literally being a professional to a noob in a matter of moments.

I'm not a pro, but I remember hooking up just 4000 to Reason was a piece of cake. If Reason got a sound (I mean you can play sound in reason on it's own) all you gotta do is to connect 2 MIDI cables (well maybe you can do this on one, but on 2 it's working without bigger thinking of MIDI flow and other stuff). 1 from MPC IN to Interface OUT and other one opposite. MPC OUT ->Interface IN. now you make device in Reason, set the midi channel in hardware mixer and set it on MPC track and it should be working.
Hope I'm right 'cus now I'm running Reason through Logic.

I did that twice last night to no avail. Perhaps I need to create a new template in Reason and then reset all of the midi, program and sequence info and that may work...

this is what my screen looks like...i dont think any thing's wrong but i could be.

If you're trying to trigger sounds in Reason, you need to change the "Out 1: Out B" to Out A, because the drum pad routing only allows "seq, sampler A, & midi out A.

So that means you need to connect the midi out A to Reason and you should be good.

Is there any midi activity happening whenever you hit the pads? If not, maybe have a look at your cables to make sure they're not bad or whatever.

I def get something from the scenario I just presented, so I know that it works.

You have to configure Reasons Advanced Midi Device module to allocate each Device in Reason a Midi channel to be triggered from Your external Midi hardware Interface device/MPC

Simply hooking up a Midi cable from MPC to your PC Midi hardware does not work,Reason works standalone within your PC so if you want to externally control it then you need to set up the Midi device in reason first,Otherwise it will simply ignore any external midi input except for the master keyboard you hooked up via the main devices setup




I know you probably done this already so please don't think I'm undermining your intellect its simply basic stuff to make sure you have everything setup correctly first

Hook up your Midi cables from MPC's chosen Midi output to your PC MIdi interface port.

heres the part you need to set up in Reason.

Goto your Advanced Midi Device module in Reason Rack,and select your hardware Interface using the the Bus select (A/B/C/D)usually if your running just one Midi hardware interface,you'd normally use on A,(although I think you can use any of those)then on the channels below select a device from Reason from your pull down menu for which you want to control,say for instance Thor IN on Channel 1,(Like the above Pic)Redrum IN on channel 2 etc,etc,
then simply sequence from MPC's respective Midi out and channels that you allocated the Reason Devices to via your Advanced Midi setup.

and if it doesn't work I suggest checking everything step by step once again or saying it other way, do troubleshooting and try to find what's missing.

OOOOOOKKKKKKAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!! i got it!!! now alls i gotta do is get the pads to trigger the correct midi notes

ok...this is what i had to do to get it to work:

midi out A from MPC to midi in on FW410, the interface (just like you guys said)

opened Record and created a combi with a redrum unit inside

went to advanced midi (just like you guys said) and selected combi on midi in 1 in Record

named program and multi and sequence "Reason Template" on the MPC

hit pad assign and put all pads in banks A and B in keyboard ascending order on MPC

saved sequence, program and multi in internal HD MPC

all systems go...
