Happy 2004 -- the year when the MV-8000 begins to take over!
The first review influenced some readers to contact me privately about the MV-8000. There are a few members from this website and another who are considering the purchase of an MV.
USB CONNECTION
This second review begins with the operating details of the MV-to-PC USB connection.
The MV currently has no software application equivalent to ak.Sys. Communication between the MV and a computer allows only the transfer of files in both directions. If history repeats itself, this Roland product will eventually have a sound editing application similar to those available for the MC-909 and Fantom-S.
To initiate a USB session between the MV and a computer running Windows XP the following steps are performed:
1. Press the DISK/USB button on the MV-8000
2. Press the F3 key to select the USB icon
3. Press the F5 key to establish the connection
4. Press F1 (No) or F5 (Yes) to save the current project
After a few seconds the MV displays the word "Connected" with a continuously moving candy-striped progress bar indicating the connection is live.
As with many other products, such as the MPC4000, files residing on the computer cannot be viewed at the instrument end of the USB connection. The MV appears as a Removable Disk icon with a drive letter in the My Computer folder. Doubling clicking on the drive icon reveals one system file and several folders on the MV.
The MV-8000 owner’s manual has a precautionary statement regarding these items. They can be backed up from a computer over the USB connection. However, file transfers in the direction of the PC to the MV should be done using only the User folder. Deleting or modifying system files in the other folders may corrupt important files. The files and folders transferred to the User folder should be copied, imported, or moved using the MV interface.
When finished transferring files the following steps terminate the USB connection:
1. Right click on the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the PC System Tray
2. Choose the Safely Remove Hardware item on the popup menu
3. Click on the Stop command button in the Safely Remove Hardware dialog box
4. Click on OK in the Stop a Hardware Device dialog box
5. Click on the Close command button in the Safely Remove Hardware dialog box
6. Wait a few seconds
7. Press the F5 Disconnect key on the MV-8000
The connection progress bar changes to white and the MV-8000 window displays "Disconnected" status.
MEMORY EXPANSION
Another topic of interest to many readers is memory expansion. The standard 128 MB provided with the MV-8000 is sufficient for beginning projects. Eventually, an MV owner will want to expand the memory to its 512 MB maximum. The MV owner’s manual lists these specifications for compatible DIMM modules:
168 pins, PC100 CL = 2 or PC133 PC = 3, 3.3 V
128 MB, 256 MB, or 512 MB

To install the new memory module I placed the MV face down. The sides and four corners were supported a few inches from a table by reams of paper from a local office supply store, elevating the display and controls from the table, per the instructions in the owner’s manual. MPC2000(XL) owners should note that step and follow it when installing memory in their instrument. I removed the 16 screws from the bottom plate, and then attached an anti-static wrist strap plugged into a wall outlet ground.
In addition to the populated DIMM slot there are two empty sockets on the MV-8000 system board. One of them is a 34-pin socket for connecting the MV8-OP1 expansion board to the center of the system board. The other is apparently a spare 50-pin IDE socket, perhaps used as a test point during manufacturing. There is no additional room inside the case to mount anything such as a second hard drive. All 3 internal drives are shielded, making it impossible to identify their manufacturer without further disassembly.
The 512 MB DIMM was swapped into the single memory slot. I placed the original 128 MB module into the anti-static bag from the Crucial Technology module. Then I took photos of the MV interior and resealed the case. After I powered up the unit I navigated to the System Information area to confirm the new memory module is active.
The MV-8000 relies on the concept of a Project, which consists of sound libraries, an effects library, 16 songs, and a few other items. When a new project is being created items can be inherited from the current active project. The user makes choices from a list of checkboxes. It is helpful to think of a project as corresponding to a music CD, and then import appropriate WAV files into that project.
Sample projects and a song template on the hard drive use much of the factory memory. This can hinder one’s learning. In the early weeks of new ownership the user will want to play the included factory sound files to become familiar with machine operations. If many imported sound files are added to an existing project or some variation of it, then memory may be used up very quickly. Trying to understand what to use in the beginning is slightly challenging. The owner’s manual is of no help in this regard. Without any guidance I found there is a tendency to include more items than necessary when creating a project because I did not know if I might require them later.
These 3 Projects are supplied on the hard drive of a new MV-8000:
MVDEMO_SONG1 49 MB
RealityCheck 62 MB
SONGTEMPLATE 109 MB
Project size corresponds to the amount of memory used by the project. Some may ask, “What is a typical project size?” There is no clear answer to this question. It can be very small. For example, I created a project with minimal support. For a size test I imported the 16 WAV files from the 6027_INDUSTRIAL_.PGM program inside the MPC3000_DISKS/SYNTH_DRUMS folder on the MPC2000XL factory sample CD. I wrote a simple 3-track song and saved the project. The project size was a meager 2 MB.
In summary, it is rarely necessary to install more than 256 MB on an MPC4000. The MV-8000 comes with 128 MB. At some point you will want to expand the memory to at least 256 MB.
IMPORTING FILES
This review will end with a short discussion about importing sound files from other hardware products into the MV-8000.
Importing WAV files is straightforward. The sound files get loaded from an internal drive and assigned to the pads. Roland S-700 series patch data goes one step further in that patches can be imported directly into the MV and assigned in an instrument library.
The MV has minimal support for AKAI MPC data. WAV files from an MPC2000(XL) are copied to the machine and assigned to pads by the user. There is no way to take an MPC2000(XL) program and have its sound files automatically mapped to the MV pads. The file-to-pad assignment must be completed manually.
Not being able to effortlessly migrate programs may come as surprising news to MPC owners, but there is an upgrade path for them regardless of the work involved. You might want to modify the sound characteristics of migrated WAV files anyway. When learning a new electronic instrument the owner usually places more emphasis on new songs rather than maintaining old material on the new instrument. Migrating files to the MV incurs a small nuisance activity as a new patch is built. (A program is called a “Patch” in Roland terminology.) It should not keep you from buying the MV-8000 considering the many additional features you will gain.
CONCLUSION
