7 Years Later... How is she holding up?

I don't have one right now.
When I sold mine it was fours years old and still running strong.

I got my MPC4000 back in 2003. My MPC was one of numerous broken units we had at AKAI. I swapped out a couple of boards and had a working unit for $50. fully loaded. Since it had no previous owner, was it new?

Since then I have only had one problem, pad 4 was not triggering properly. In the test mode, there was "activity" on the pad even though I was not touching the pad. I opened the unit, removed the pads and took a slightly damp, lint free cloth and wiped the surface of the pad sensors. After that the MPC worked. Never had any other problems.

Got mine in January 2002 and its still working perfectly! Maybe I'm gentle on the pads or something.

I bought my MPC4K in 2004, and it's not doing so well. It has quite a few button and knob problems, but those I think I could fix or get fixed. It has some more serious electrical problems -- I get big bursts of noise from the analog out option board. I'm living in China and haven't run into anyone here who I think could fix it. MPC's aren't very popular over here; everyone uses software. I've thought about shipping it over the U.S. to be repaired, but that's pretty dicey -- I've had a few lost shipments and I don't want to risk it.



I still haven't found a software platform that I like as well as the MPC4K for making drum loops.

I don't recall all the individual prices but, total, it was all less than $200.

I almost forgot, a few MPC hats, a Z hat, and a few AKAI T-shirts.

Got my 2KXL brand new in '01. I had bought online and had it mailed to South Korea when I was stationed there.
I upped the memory to 32Mb, changed out the floppy for a Zip100, then changed out the ZIp100 for a 250, then changed out the Zip250 for a SCSI card reader PCD-47B, changed the pads to the black ones, added an internal 9Gb harddrive and lastly, added the 8-outs to it. I burned up a resistor on the circuit board by inserting the 8-outs ribbon cable backwards (didn't have the notch on the cable to be inserted the correct way) and it burnt up the pad sensor sheet.
That was a $138 costly mistake.

Still works great 8 years later!
