Sorry, and no disrespect but all what you say is myth. Its the same mystical voodoo nonsense about the MPC groove which really should be left in the dark ages where it belongs. The answer as to why certain MPCs groove better than others is simply down to how accurate their internal clocka are. Nothing more, nothing less. Its not just you. Others suggest its sloppy internal clock is somehow good for the groove. Again, an utterly ridiculous notion. What we need are super tight internal clocks, and actually this is exactly what we have in the 4k. I have just done the Litmus test an hour ago.


In regards what your saying about the resolution. Sure, if your playing triple quartet trills with a signature of 4/7 trotter style then those little trills would be best recorded at a higher resolution where a very small degree of quantisation is desired on those fancy little trills. In edm and Hip Hop we rarely need anything fancier than 32 or 64 triplet, the majority of the time 1/16 does it all. If I am recording a 4/4 kik I dont need to set my sequencer to 1/4 quantise in order to make sure it the kik plays back at quarter intervals (Unless im so rhythmically challenged I play everything a quarter beat out of time. The sequencer if set to 1/16 will have no problems placing the kik at quarter intervals even if i'm a complete amateur. What your saying just clouds the issue of can sequencer X keep time or not, ie is its internal clock accurate. Its not about the resolution which is about the sequencers ability to capture ever nuance of the players timing and place those events as closely as possible to when the pads were struck. But no matter how high the resolution if you intended that kik drum to be a position 1.1.0 thats where you want it to be. So in a wave editor with a a one bar 4/4 kik recorded @ 120bpm the distance between each note would be exactly 22050 samples. It would be the exact same number whether e a resolution of 1/96 and 1/100.000 was used.

TO THE OP

A few days ago I posted asking for anyone to sequence up some quarter notes on the 4k, record it and send me the file. I requested the same thing in the 5k forum becasue I wanted to decide between the two. Guess what my absolute main consideration was? TIMING! Specifically how accurate is the internal clock.

Deep down, and only from YT videos I knew the 4k could groove so one came up a day ago and I went and bought it despite not knowing how accurate the internal clock is. Keep in mind that is my main consideration when buying a machine with its own internal sequencer.

Ive tested quite a bit of gear now using a test called the Litmus Test. Check this link for how the test is performed. http://www.innerclocksystems.com/New%20 ... itmus.html

I performed the exact same Litmus Test on the 4k a couple of hours ago. I did this after playing around with the 4k just banging in rhythms and there was no doubt about it this thing could Groove. But, there was a possibility that could have been new owner delusions (although I seriously doubted it) and I then set-up and performed the test.

That wikipedia statement, definitely NOT endorsed by Akai (and merely the words of someone with an agenda) is utter BS becasue the Litmus test has just proved the MPC4ks maximum variation between any two consecutive quarter note intervals is 4 samples.. That's right, a minuscule 4 samples making it share the title as the tightest MPC of them all along with the MPC3k. 8)

I'm really amazed at the results. I knew the thing was tight but I really didnt think it was going to match the 3k.

Do the test your self! Try it, see for your self.

Don't give that Wiki any heed. You have the tightest hardware sequencer on the planet along with the 3k. Even the very latest hardware with built in sequencers doesn't come close to what you have.

I think the wiki statement was due to operator error, misunderstanding or total ignorance of the higher resolution, and horrible human timing, perhaps also sloppy chopping.

Wiki has been edited and I will try and get that sentence removed becasue its utter drivel. From the moment I got that 4k hooked up yesterday and within 30 seconds of playing stuff in to the sequencer I could tell the s sequencer was super tight.

Whoever wrote that on wikipedia clearly had an agenda.

Never had a problem with mine. I usually get out of what it I put in. If I play a part badly it comes out badly. With the higher resolution or if you have 32nd note timing correction turned on, it will shift closer to what you hit, which might be slightly after the 1/16th note before the one you wanted to hit it on. A trick that I use is if it's a faster beat and im trying to get the kick in a certain spot, I'll slow it down/mute the samples and get the kick sitting right, then speed it back up to regular speed. Much easier than trying to lay it down at like 92bpm or something.

I just recorded 48 bars and it gets sooo off sync, getting more so and more so the longer I record. it RUSHES like a MF, and I knew this. It starts being off by 4 and 8 ms, but by the time I get to the 49th bar it is off by 620 MS. Imagine if I kept recording...

My 1000 NEVER did this (although this thing sounds much better).

You guys know we got off 96 timing option too!

Of course off is 960 so your timing is going to show naturally.

Some years back when the 4k released in 2002 it got a lot of hate from the posters complaining about OS. 1.03 so a lot have changed since then a lot with users adjusting to the timing.

Hell logic is at 3840 ppq and it really shows your timing if you are off :lol:
