Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000

OS updates are alwasy welkome..

second update in march :D

read somethinmg about induvidual loopoints per track in 2005 :D

but I do admit I thought Akai was going to play there cards right and drop a big OS for Namm winter show..

I was expecting a recycle like feature that inter-acted in someway with the qlink-step sequencer ...

no indication of Fix for the random: delete one note (or assign sliced sample to seq) and the rest of the pattern is deleted bug .. sadly  ..I encounter that bug allthe time but noone else seams to mention it ..hmmm

but hey using faders and knobs to chop up your sample is keeping me from frustration, besides I'd rather wait, and get two solid OS updates rather than one big one with a jojo stability ..

oh wow.. akai keep doing a good job

Blue Haze: its kinda stupid telling people to accept this and that and this guy only uses this and he is the shit etc... Point is, 3 years after its release, the machine isnt done yet! Funny in a sad way.

Im Excited about using the qlink sliders and pots to trim the samples now. Helps me out a lot. Also the trim/loop page fixe is heaven sent. It will make things for me and the way i work a lot faster.

Look disappointment always makes a mofo want to point the finger (boom boom on your wack as quick) busters love to point the finga! 2Pac. My point is I use the 4k to remix all the time and some of the new things were not part of the original design anyway. The more you learn your gear the more work arounds you can do. As a person I tried to find ways to get things done. Of course the updates are nice and free and I love the new additions which make work easier but I can`t **** and complian to a fellow mpc users about it it a wimp out I got to learn my shit. On the other boards like 3k and 2K don`t cry over spilled milk they get shit done. Think of it why do most long time producers work with 20 to 15 old year because they learned that **** inside and out. I don`t know charge your car into Akai headquarters and blow the **** up I don`t care. But the point is too many people are sitting on the fence waiting for some super duper update to turn the mpc into a Live, Reason, or Linear sequencer. I get inspired by the pros like Madlib, Evil Dee, Jay Dee and others who constantly say its not the gear its the man and they make all kinds of shit on 3000, 60. and 2000 303 and other which is technically less advanced than the 4k. Which is more stupid the machine or the man operating it. It only does what you tell it. It is called human input not just pushing a button and its simplified for ya. Case in point using the rectified graphic screen, it is easier to see the trim points of a sample, but if you use your ears you will definitely get better editing trim points for snatching that snare, horn, or piano riff you want. On the 60 and 3000 this is how is it done and at the same time you develop your ear for sounds. How are you going to develop your ear if the software sets the trim points for you with overlapping sounds?

I`m not trying to tell you to eat swalllow shit. All I`m saying it the positive with some limitations you can develop your skills and learn techniques for sounds. Everything else is music theory, rhythm, and having fun with your shit. Shitttttt I want Akai to never be done with development to be constantly updating the software for the next 10 years because unless others I don`t plan to jump to the next super wonder that comes out around the corner. I only got the 4k because I want a full sampler rather than a mpc and triton combo, and old school 3k and 950 combo. Learn your gear like the pioneers before you that all. The history of this is that the original makeup of this gear wasn`t intend for looping phrases or timestrecthing whole bars and shit. The pioneers got creative and use the gear in new ways to get what they want out of the machines. Like I quote before and I repeat the best new gear you can use is your brain "Alchemist".

For remixing I say two words breakpoint editing.

Kalei: I think is kinda of smart to tell people to step their game up and to be inspired by people because its has always been about great musicians and they the people can be the shit too it all mental. Point is, 3 years after you pick it up what can you do, how can you flip shit on still, it is much deeper than the previous mpcs and it is constantly being updated with new additions. Funny in a good way to do more with less sometimes ghetto style.

Little secret the mpc is not a groove machine, I say once again the mpc is not a groove machine, it is a drum machine, midi sequencer used to make dance music that`s it. But the djs before and plenty of dance music producers after learn to make the music they wanted using them since 1987 til infinity how about you? I have Live, Reason too and if I really wanted a groove machine combined (synth, sampler, drum machine, and sequencer I would have opted for the Yamaha RS7000 or the Roland 909 or software for that. But the mpc 4k is just a drum machine, full sampler , drum sequencer nothing more nothing less. It is basically up to you to make it do what you want. I study how pioneers in the past used their gear to make their beats which is a harder way but it really helps you understand the process so you can use about any machine in the future.

I mainly use the mpc as a sequencer only and use software sampler (vsampler) for my samples, because this works good for me, and it isn't a real big deal to me about the new os update, but one thing that upsets me is the fact that they promise you something by a certain time and don't deliver, now they are playing catch up with roland's mv8000 hinting to the fact that the update might have some of the same features that the mv8000 already has. Akai should never be in the position of playing catch up but instead should be blazing the trail. Don't get me wrong I love my mpc, but akai should have never gotten so complacent.

AKAI has never officially said what features they are adding nor have they promised any release dates. AKAI does not have to add any of the extra features outside of what was advertised. Also, AKAI could decide to charge for OS updates for the extra features. Look at it this way, Microsoft went from Windows 95, then 98 and so on.... they didn't give you the new features for free only the bug fixes.

Just something to think about.

I think i'd be prepared to do that actually ! i'm a recent owner of a MPC4000 and i'd be happy to pay for features that are not here yet ! if only that could speed the process of having what we want for this machine i say why not !

Blue Haze: Its funny how youre writing all those long essays and shit, its all good. Just dont make the mistake of talking to me like im a kid that doesnt know shit, i been making beats on samplers since 1989 so about limitations, i know all about that, and how to make it work, ok?

I agree you shouldnt sit around and wait for things to happen, rather make music with what you got and when an update comes along it comes along. Doesnt mean you cant be pissed off at akai now does it?

adrian: what about intellisample? Or the .prj files?

Intellisample was implemented a long time ago. As for prj. files we have to wait and see.

I have never complained about a peice of gear in my life ...well maybe my vs-1880 because I didnt know how to get the panning automation to work but that was a user issue not a product issue. So im alway shocked when I see someone complaining about a feature a couple of years ago wasnt even thought of. Its like If I was to say "DAMN When is Akai going to implament the strobe light midi preset patterns"

Intellisample as I remember it meant you were able to sample several samples batch-style and programs would be automade and probably other stuff i cant remember. In what way is intellisample implemented in the 4k now?
