MPC4000 MIDI Implementation bugs?

Hmm, nope, I definately can't get the cc68 to work for legato
There goes another documentation bug!

The MPC4000/Z4/Z8 SysEx Guide (v1.50) does say you can change this parameter by SysEx...
However, curiously, it has an extra value besides "OFF" and "PITCH" - you can also set it to "LOOP" ?
Anyone know what this is? (perhaps its one of those things which is only for the Z4/Z8 ? Or maybe it's just more bullshit

remember the two FOOTSWITCH sockets on the back of the MPC4000?

Well you can go to GLOBAL mode > FOOT SW page
and set these to various commands.

"LEGATO" is one of 'em.
(Also "SOSTENUTO", and "HOLD2". ... I know what these normally do, generically - but what do they make the MPC4000 do??

No, there isn't.

I believe its exclusively on Feline´s hard drive..

The annotated PDF I did only has little Acrobat "post it" notes,
marking where the material from the OS Addenda PDFs should go,
it doesn't have the actual text itself!

I found another omission in the MPC4000 MIDI Implementation Chart for the Sampler section (p111 of the MPC4000 User Guide) -
cc66 for "SOSTENUTO" is supported, but isn't documented.

If you send a "sostenuto" message, then the currently played notes are held. (ie you can then play new notes over the top)

(contrast with cc64, for "SUSTAIN")

OK, I think I have sussed this out as much as I can without Akai's help.

There are two interrelated things here:
(i) the list of MIDI continuous controller's which the Sampler section responds to directly (i.e. in a "hard-wired" fashion - you don't have to set them up in the Program Modulation Matrix) - this is documented on p.111 of the MPC4000 User Guide

(ii) the list of commands you can assign to the two footswitches (via GLOBAL mode > FOOT SW page) - this is documented on pp.121-122 of the MPC4000 Reference manual.


Anyway, for both (i) and (ii), the documentation has errors and doesn't really explain what's going on.

For the 'hard-wired' MIDI continuous controlls for the Sampler, the User Guide claims the following are implemented:
cc0 Bank Select
cc1 Mod Wheel
cc7 Volume
cc10 Pan
cc64 Sustain
cc65 Portamento On/Off
cc67 Soft Pedal
cc68 Legato
cc84 Portamento Control
Also mode messages:
cc 120 All Sound Off
cc 121 Reset All Controllers
cc 123 All Notes Off

However the following ones don't work:
cc1 ModWheel - not hardwired, you need to set it up in the Program Mod Matrix to do whatever you want
cc68 Legato - doesn't work - it won't change the "MonoLegato" program function (you need to use SysEx to do this)
cc84 Portamento Control - doesn't work (this is normally used for specifying the *source* note of polyphonic portamento)

Additionally, the following two cc's ARE hard-wired, but not documented:
cc5 Portamento Time
cc66 Sostenuto.

(NB - behaviour of cc0 Bank Select, cc64 Sustain and cc65 soft pedal are configurable)

Note also that the MIDI mode > ROUTING page affects how this behaves.
These "hard-wired" controllers won't affect the behaviour of notes coming from the *Sequencer* or Pads unless you route MIDI IN I or II to the sequencer first.

The commands assignable to Footswitch 1 and 2 are analagous to these "hard-wired" commands. However they appear to be routed directly to the sequencer section, so will only affect notes from the Pads or sequencer - they'll only affect notes coming in from MIDI IN I or II if these are routed to the sequencer. They won't affect notes from MIDI IN I & II if these go directly to the sampler.

The MIDI cc commands you can assign to the Footswitch are NOT documented in the MPC4000 Reference Manual at all!
They are the "switch" ones (as the continuous ones like Volume, Pan and Portamento Time make no sense with an on/off footswitch):
cc64 Sustain Pedal
cc65 Portamento On/Off
cc66 Sostenuto
cc67 Soft Pedal
cc68 Legato
cc69 Hold2
cc120 All Sound Off
cc121 Reset All Controllers
cc123 All Notes Off

These behave just the same as the external cc's - i.e. they are all "hard-wired", except Legato (which doesn't change the Program "Mono Legato" setting), and Hold2 .... if you want Legato & Hold2 to do anything, you have to set up something manually in the Program Modulation Matrix.


(There are no documented SysEx commands to adjust any of this stuff.)
