Look smarty pants, I spent about £4grand on this machine by the time I'd got all the RAM, add-on boards, flight case, CD drive, etc etc.

If I sold it now I'd get about one grand!

It is still probably the most solid standalone sequencer and sampler going.

So I am keeping the damn thing!

It's just annoying when you power-use a feature and you can so obviously see with each one "well if they just did this and this and fixed that etc etc" then it would all be that little bit better.
About 80% or more of the worst bugs that were present in 2002 did get fixed in the end, but it's still short of what it might have been and leaves a sour taste in the mouth -
especially when one sees Akai's current kiddie-toy MPCs coming out instead.

If anyone wants a new killer drum machine this year or 2009,
check out Dave Smith/Roger Linn's forthcoming machine. It's gonna be the one....

MPC4k

If you want to have a full sampler onboard, the MPC4 is still the best sampling sequencer ever made, in fact its the only one of its class

its OS is still pretty weak, a lot of things take longer they should, its badly organised, some things don't work - there is no reliable user manual, sysex screwed (?), many things like mod sources and fx are very badly labelled, blah, blah

I think it is very very very easy to undertsand why people love the 4k and will use it until it croaks, but find it daily irritating and dream of a myriad of improvements... for example here:

especially as nothing better is on the horizon, possibly ever....

so this is not "whining" and it does not do service to some of the people here who know the 4k inside out to characterise them as "whiners" - frankly, I am amazed feline has been so polite to you. Has he grown? Or more likely, just given up....

you questions do make me wonder if there is an up to date buglist/weird implementation somewhere? Its a long time since i saw one

This is 2008 and I bet most users will keep their 4k when the 5k comes out next month. And 2yrs later 2010 we all will still be using a 4k nothing is going to change on the net. Yeah we all invested time, energy, love, and effort in your units and by now most can do crazy things and make partly the music and sound they want but dude stated plainly Numark can give two **** about us and a new code. I know that some are keeping the flame alive in a hope that a mysterious ex-Akai employee would come to the rescue but like the pink guy say Akai Japan fuk up, Akai America went bankrupt, and Numark bought the company without a care for a great white elephant they had no more intention on selling or promoting any more.

On the other hand just like the great 60 and 3k strives on cuz of the users making fanstastic music and the units becoming hard to find units like the TR-808s and so on and so on the user of the 4k can retain and make it into a classic mpc. The 4k is what it is a hybrid keygroup sampler sequencer one of the best on the market and the last of it`s kind it seems.

Anyways you guys ask all the questions to Andy as you like cuz you can`t get any more direct than from the source NUMARK SALES AND PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE EXPERT.

I agree with Feline and Richard, there is no sequencer/sampler combo that comes close. Despite many complaints, it is pretty damn solid and easy to work with if you know its limitations and workarounds. EVERY hardware sequencer and sampler has limitations and COULD be better. This one might have a few more bugs, but consider it has 50x the features of most machines out there and its not so bad a trade off.

All the people that didn't like the 4k from day one were the ones that helped the 4000 die, and it is obvious why the new Akai has no intention to go back. You have to face the fact that most of the people that bought them in the first place got them for studio bling and realized, it wasn't as easy to make a quick program as before and couldn't grasp the new concepts. Those same people will have the 5000 and will enjoy it more. You just don't need a 4000 to chop up loops and play them back. This is why the 60/3000 is still sought after.

There is no point in talking about buglists and feature lists anymore, it is clearly just a waste of breath. We have what we've got and it isn't going to change, at least from Akai. The Akai uk posts make this clear. The guy is even contradicting himself saying that nobody wants a clean 24/96 machine, yet they put on all new best sounding converters. Most likely he is comparing to the 2500. His sole purpose on this board is to tell everyone why they NEED a 5000, that is his job. I agree it is a great upgrade IF you are a 1000/2500 user. If you have a 4000 for the right reasons, you will laugh and continue on.

It is also clear that the source isn't going to come up unless it is stolen, or someone with interest pays out Akai/buys them. Akai uk says they will explain soon. I've always thought it has to do with the fact that it would not be good for their current line for them to allow this. Think about how many people will not be upgrading to the 5k simply bec they want to keep their JJ OS. Then think about how many posts will come up every week with someone asking if JJ will do an OS for this or that MPC… ugh.

Ok, ok, ok, ok, lets stay on track. To have the 4k OS issue settled once and for all get the info straight from Andy of Numark. No use going at each other in anger remember we each bought a 4k for bad or worst. It is a great mpc to have yes.

I was a nice chap when i arrived here but go back through my first posts and notice the replies I got from Feline1. He was not polite back then. Hes a jerk adn most of all, hes a fool for buying the MPC4000 when it released. And after 6 years he still complains. yes, he is a whiner, a pussy, whatever you call it. And up yours too. Frankly my attitude on this forum is caused by you MPC users. Now take a good breath and go make a tune.., with your white elephant. lol
